Reviews
PSYC1101 was definitely one of the most well-organised units, all resources and requirements are fairly clear. The UCs, the lecturers and the tutors were super friendly, and they really did their best to make sure the offshore students receive the same level of support and resources as onshore students. But the unit was not an easy HD, it really depends on the individuals. If you're moderately interested in the subject (not enrolling just for the HD) and can manage time well enough to read through the textbook, you'll find that the unit content is fairly straightforward. Even though they are not reusing quizzes, the final exam came from 95% of the textbook, and the lectures covered about 50-70% of the textbook. If you read the textbook and do the review quizzes, the final exam is pretty HD-able. For me, the lab report was the hardest (but to be fair, I suck at writing lab reports). Another tip from me would be to use Studiosity for lab reports and to plan the schedule for the research participation ahead of time.

I took this unit as an elective. Last time I learned science, that was 5 years ago, so I struggled a bit in the beginning. I spent about a week on the lab report because it was worth quite high and got 83% for it. The final exam turned out easier than expected and you don't actually need to read the textbook because 95% of it came from the lectures. I was lucky I watched all the lectures because I know some people who read the textbook only and ended up struggling during the exam because some stuff in the lectures were not in the textbook. Got an HD in the end with minimal effort. Kinda stressed me out a bit though, but you'll be ok as long as you keep up with the lectures and get 100% on the quizzes and research participation (time is the only thing you need to get 100% on them, so don't lose marks). Don't know anything about how well the unit coordinators or lab demonstrators handle students as I never emailed them throughout the semester but they seemed alright.

Lectures are fine. Most labs are boring. Lab report was fine, but small mistakes related to formatting and APA will cost you a lot of marks, which is very dumb. Exam was fine but it all comes down to how well you memorise, meaning you won't learn something because you can't actually learn just by memorising. If you just want HD, just watch all the lectures and make notes while listening, do all the quizzes, get full marks on research participation, and following all the instructions for the lab report, but if you actually wanna learn something, then don't take this unit.

The unit content itself was pretty straight-forward and although the textbook does deepen your understanding, I wouldn’t recommend buying it because all of the questions came from the lecture slides. The labs (2hrs) felt very unproductive and often you’d end up just sort of sitting there. Even if you don’t do well in the lab report, it’s still fairly easy to end up with a distinction if you’ve done all the quizzes and research participation + do decently on the final exam (study the lecture slides!!!). The lectures themselves were mostly pretty interesting and if you’ve done Psychology ATAR then a lot of the material covered in them is quite similar. Overall not too bad.

Don't read reviews before 2021. The unit coordinators changed and now it is no longer an easy HD unit. Bad option for an elective if you are looking for a unit that you can just breeze through and get HD. However, if you like or are interested in psych, then you may enjoy this unit. I am just writing this based on my experience this semester and I definitely did not enjoy this unit. I agree with one of the reviewers down below that the cohort is very large and that the unit coordinators are a bit useless. Topics are not that difficult despite coming from an accounting background, but I know a lot of people who struggled and regret taking this unit. Currently preparing for the exam and I have to say that it's just too much. This is only a first-year unit, hope the unit coordinators come to their senses and not let us read a very long text book that will only help our 110 MCQ questions in the final exam.

really enjoyed this unit. i feel like it's super beneficial if you've done psych in highschool because it's legit a repeat of that. easy HD if you did psyc, but some of my friends who haven't done it before did say they found it difficult. downside to this year is that the exam is no longer based on the quizzes tf

Don't listen to the previous reviews. They are NO longer reusing quizzes qs for the exam. There's just way too many students in this unit (1400ish), which means marks will be moderated quite a lot especially for the lab report. I personally think the UCs don't really care about us but maybe that's just me and I also understand because there's just way too many students to handle. Topics were quite ok to understand coming from a non-science background and I managed to get quite decent marks (borderline HD), but I personally don't enjoy this unit. If you are interested in pursuing psych or learning about it then this unit is for you, but NOT an easy HD.

Really liked this unit. The lectures were usually interesting and easy to get through. There is not too much content to learn especially if you have done ATAR psychology as a lot of it is similar. Most difficult part was the lab report as they marked it quite harshly with a lot of focus on APA formatting but multiple choice exam is great much less stressful.

Piss easy unit. Very easy HD with minimal work. Weekly quizzes and an MCQ exam based on the quizzes guarantees a HD.

Perfect unit whether it is a core or broadening unit. Great intro to psychology with experts in each specialisation coming in to speak about their topics. Supportive environment and well-planned lectures/assessments. As long as you participate you'll get easy marks- including the quizzes! If you are unsure if you would like to pursue psych, this is a great unit to gain a basic understanding of the subject!
