Lectures were wonderful but it's a LOT of content to be crammed into twelve weeks – felt like I had to keep going back to them over and over just to get the very gist of what was going on. Readings were a bit tediously long and convoluted at times. Tutorials from what I heard were hit or miss, my tutor was rather out of depth and no one in the tutorial wanted to particularly speak up which left the floor to the same four out of sixteen people every lesson, but content wise it was a pretty good subject. Just be prepared for it to take up a lot of your time, and really only do it if you're keen on politics as a major.

Had a great tutor, and the subject material was interesting to research and write about (most of the topics were relevant to modern day stuff) but it was sometimes hard to navigate and the assignments sound easy but they're kinda tough

Interesting subject, hard to do well in. Out of my peers, I hadn't heard of anyone who got over a H2B for their final mark. The subject is interesting but broad. It gives you a taste test of basic international theory concepts, it is divided into 3 sections (first - history of International relations (IR), second - theories of IR, third - issues of IR like migration, human rights, nuclear weapons etc...). A lot of the readings are taken from a textbook, so be prepared to purchase one. My tutor was pretty strange, she was clearly very smart and opinionated but her teaching style was lacking. I felt like I didn't learn much in the tutorials and discussion felt really pressed. Would not recommend for students not studying politics, it will fuck up your WAM.

This subject was interesting, as it covered the basics of the prominent political theories, as well as the real work application and history of politics in the international sector. The assessments are quite hard sometimes, as the standard is very high because the cohort is usually pretty bog. The tutorials are good, especially for consolidating the content of the lectures and Dr Winston is super cool and does a bunch of fun little activities in the lectures through out the semester. Would defiantly recommend for someone thinking of majoring in politics, but maybe not for breadth.

The lectures were unimpressive and the tutorials were frankly a waste of time. You learn a little bit about international political theory (Marxism, Realism, etc.) but I found them too vague to be useful.

Relevant and interesting. Definitely not an easy subject but rewarding. Good foundation for anyone majoring in politics. I would recommend this subject and going to the PASS sessions.

Great first year politics subjects - introduces you to the idea of local and internationally-based political analysis, along with interesting theory and debate-fuelled tutorials

One of my favorite subjects this year! Really interesting content and Daniel McCarthy is a really engaging and interesting lecturer. Well organized tutorials and well thought out assessment questions. This subject really gives you everything you need to learn a lot and get really good marks aswell.

I found the content very interesting and it has given me a greater awareness of the international system as it exists today. The controversial issues such as refugees and humanitarian intervention also tend to make for interesting tutorials!! The lecturers are excellent - very engaging and knowledgable, though their lectures are fast paced and the political theory component of the course - which lasts several weeks - is quite dry. Assessments were fair but difficult to do very well in. Overall, I would highly recommend this subject.

This subject covers topics such as international history, international theories (such as realism, liberalism, marxism, constructivism...), and issues such as globalisation, humanitarian intervention/ethics, climate change, WMS (weapons of mass destruction), terrorism, and the global economy. This subject was interesting but a little dry. Tutorials made up for the somewhat dull content - especially when discussing sensitive issues such as torture and ethics - so have fun with that. The assessment was manageble, and the exam kind (only 1000 word essay over a four day period). Overall, I enjoyed this subject, however the assessment could be a bit more creative - make us think a bit more
