Reviews

Challenging but VERY awarding subject, put in the time and effort and make sure not to get behind, and this subject will reward you.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2019

A very fun and challenging subject. Initially, I found the first few weeks to be pretty easy since I had programming knowledge although not in Python during high school. Don't underestimate the fact that this is an introductory programming subject - the workload is immense and you can feel that they are trying to filter out students who do programming half-heartedly. Otherwise, if you put your time well enough you can easily grab 40% of the marks with enough dedication and commitment!

Pretty good introduction to programming concepts, which is made even better with the integration of the online learning tool "Grok". The assignments are rather time-consuming though, especially for those completely new to programming, so good time-management is needed.

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2015

The work load requires >20hrs per week minimum... Poor choice of subject to pick if you have a busy semester, and are very weak at maths/ new to programming... That being said like all subjects if you look for help, you will find it with an enthusiastic team behind it. But don't be fooled, this subject can take an immense time commitment and will put you into the lowest pitfalls of misery with each failed line of code.....

I really loved this subject! Having no experience in computing I found the lectures, tutorials and the online learning tool Grok all very helpful in teaching me how to code. The lectures and tutors are all really passionate and helpful!

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2018

Fun subject! No textbook - instead you use Grok, a super easy and engaging learning tool. Made for beginners, but the subject has plenty of opportunities to extend yourself (bonus projects, modules, etc.). Tim + Nic were super enthusiastic, and the team of tutors and demonstrators were always helpful! Some tips: 1) the revision lectures aren't really worth it, your time will be better spent doing some practice problems on Grok, and 2) start the projects early because they are very time consuming and you can't really bullshit them like with essays.

Overall an extremely fun and challenging subject. Two things I liked best about this subject are the lecturers (Tim/Nic) and Grok Learning. Tutors and demonstartors were also friendly and helpful. Nevertheless, the workload of this subject is very heavy and projects are tough and time-consuming, so you really have to put in the effort and work hard to pass the subject!

Very fun and useful subject for your days ahead on CompSci. Fine selection of Guest Lecturers, definitely attend them!

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2017

A perfect beginner subject for anyone's interested in computing or programming in general.
