Awful convenor

Great Unit, crappy convenor

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2021

Generally speaking, this unit is not particularly challenging and some of the content in this course is overlapped with Afin2050 and Afin3028. This units require basic mathematics/statistics background. The UC could definitely do a much better job in running the course, e.g. being more responsive to student's inquiry...etc.

I enjoyed this unit much more than I expected. Fyi I have quite a good background in maths so if it's not your strength, you will need to work really hard to do well in this unit. but you have to be serious and study to pass

This is a decent unit if you're interested in the more quantitative areas of finance or want to head into a buy side role. The unit requires basic stat/econometrics so applied finance students should find it easier than finance majors. The assignment was badly set out and the lecturer could do a better job at explaining content in more simple terms so an average student would understand better. If you understand all the lectures/tutes and can do them with no problem then you should be able to achieve D/HD. If you don't understand anything, then i'd say go slowly and repeat until you get it. Overall, it could definitely be taught better but it's up to the student in how much effort they put into the unit. Blaming other people for a bad result is going to get you nowhere and a bad strategy in general.

One of the worst units for an applied finance student, probably because of the UC who has absolutely no idea what they are doing. Makes a mid sem exam with mark averaging 35%, clearly an indication that his teaching skills are poor.

The UC simon.... his head needs to roll. The class test average was 7.2/20 and the range was between 3-11. He's a liar where he tells us this won't be tested but it eventually is in the exam. Stay clear from this unit as possible unless you definitely have to do it.

Tried to do this subject but it's so hard to grasp what information is important i.e. applicable to exams/test and what isn't. The course has a lot of assumed knowledge that l hadn't learnt yet, but l met all the prerequisites. Summation, good luck to future students who have to do this.
