Hard course with couple new identical formulas every week, sadly my tutorial teacher go through formulas too fast without much explanation, he seems to not really understand why people struggle with applying those formulas (tears

Very mathematically orientated! But really all you need to understand is the concept of time value of money and 5 formulas. It is very possible to obtain 90+ if you really put in the initial effort to understand the mathematics behind TVM.

Great subject, a poor lecturer

I enjoyed this unit much more than I expected. Fyi I have quite a good background in maths so if it's not your strength, you will need to work really hard to do well in this unit. but you have to be serious and study to pass

Formerly, ACST101 this unit introduces basic financial concepts such as time value of money, risk and return and the corporate finance. This unit does require mathematics skills. If you're unsure on what math you need, brush up on the following: arithmetic (ie BODMAS / PEDMAS), exponential laws (or index laws), log removing exponentials. Everything is explained in lectures but it can move quickly if you don't pick it up all at once. I highly recommend attending all tutorials as they will go through the types of questions you will be asked in the mid-semester, final and weekly quizzes. The textbook is not a necessity, as the lectures cover most of the detail, but if you want additional explanations and a more explained walk through then its helpful. Note, you can read the book digitally for free on the library website. A word of caution, the first half of the course is very boring, as it feels like a math unit. After the Time Value of Money topics are completed you actually use all the formulas you have learned to financial problems (shares, bonds, capital budgeting) so just get through the first half and 9 times out of 10 you will enjoy the second half a lot more just because its more applied. [completed S1-2016]

This subject is a good introduction into Finance and introduces many key concepts such as time value of money and risk vs reward. The difficulty level is not very high, however many students with a weaker level of mathematics tend to find this course difficult. It's important to attend the tutorials for this course as the tutors work through the more challenging questions during these.

Acts as an Introductory unit to Finance and is relatively easy to score well in. A basic grasp of math is all that is required
