Reviews

The main lecturer and the tutor did not really understand the issues of discrimination and racism. It was kind of disappointing. Also, it was kind of disconcerting how our tutor would downplay racism and not acknowledge the experiences of the people-of-colour in the tute. A positive is that the recommended readings were good, and one guest lecturer was good. But, overall, the subject was a waste of time. I learnt nothing about race and ethnicity from the lecturer or my tutor. In fact, the way our teachers taught the subject may even be detrimental to white students who wanted to learn more about the issues. It confused them more than it provided elucidation. Another positive take, I learnt first hand how poorly 'top rated' universities teach the issue of race/ethnicity. Recommendation to uni: For a subject title 'race and ethnicity', it would be good to have main lecturers/tutors who are people-of-colour, e.g. who have properly experienced what its like to be discriminated against for the colour of their skin all their life (hint: its not white people, white-passing people, white people with a head scarf, or migrants who have only been here a relatively short time).
