Reviews

This subject is pretty full-on. The content isn't too tricky, and the multiple choice component is extremely fair. However, written assessments (assignments, tests and exam) can be quite difficult and you don't get practice on writing skills. The tutes are important- you need to attend but don't expect much collaboration. The teaching quality in lectures is great, but if you don't understand expect to use youtube, google etc.

I felt that the content was generally really well presented in this subject. They released at least half of the semesters lectures about a week before semester even started, which gave us a lot of freedom in working through them, although we still had to get through them before the weekly quizzes (usually about 13 MCQ due Sunday night). They were all broken down into 2-15 minute videos which definitely made working through them more manageable, especially with the "thinking questions" throughout to consolidate the information. The tutorials were generally alright, and made up mostly of PollEv questions and discussion around them. The assignments were pretty good as well, and usually fairly quick to complete. Most people didn't score particularly highly on the mid-semester tests (I think the average was around mid-60's?), and the written response section of them was really quite specific and required a lot of detail for content that was only lightly covered during lectures. The exam was quite fair, and I didn't feel hugely rushed for time in it, which was good. Overall, a fairly good subject, even though the content was not necessarily my favourite

Terry and Heather are not bad lecturers by any means, but the content can be overwhelming at times. The recordings are pre-released and you just work through them and attend the weekly workshops. There is a lot to remember and a lot to take in, and revision is essential. However, the assessments were quite fair and very much doable. If you are organised and stay on top of the content, it is not difficult to do well in this subject.

my favourite subject that I've completed so far at uni!! as already mentioned, Terry and Heather are so passionate about the subject which makes it so easy to learn about. I enjoy having the lectures set up in short online videos for each module (approx. 12 videos ranging from 5 min to 12 min) as it makes it easy to work through in short chunks. Also the videos are easy to fly through as you can comfortably listen to Terry on 1.5x speed and Heather on 2x speed. Yes, there is a lot of content but it is so interesting to learn about that it didn't feel like much at all! It would make sure people take special note of the tutorial questions as one of the questions covered in the tutorials was the EXACT SAME as one that was on the exam, so it really rewards those who pay attention. I also love this subject because they actually provide you with past MSTs and exams with answers (for mc and fill in the blanks but not SA) that really help guide what type of questions will be on the exam. If i could take this subject again, I would 10 times over!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting content and the lecturers were highly knowledgeable, however you need to keep up with the lectures. At the end of this subject you'll feel proud that you've learnt so much!

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2017

content heavy, hard, don't know what the lecturers expect from us.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2018

Great subject. Dedicated lecturers who are always happy to help. A lot of resources are provided to prepare the students for all assessments. Very interesting content which is a great introduction to further biochemistry studies in later years.

Absolutely loved this subject. They gave so much practice material and the lecturer was incredibly engaging. There was very little actual chemistry as it was more focused on the molecular side of things - so that was right up my ally.

This subject was very enjoyable and Terry is absolutely brilliant at lecturing the content. To those who are planning to do this subject, don't be intimidated by the word 'Biochemistry' because there's actually very little chemistry involved; it's definitely a lot more on the biology side. To those who have done biology and chemistry (especially food chemistry) in year 12 of high school, this subject is essentially an extension of what you learnt (even though it is a second year subject). All the topics taught link very well with each other and content is not that overwhelming. The online lectures I found was fine although it would be nice to provide solutions to the tutorials even if you attended them to make sure you absolutely understand what you're learning. It was also really nice to see intended learning outcomes so you have a good idea of what is being assessed. Both the MSTs and the exam was quite fair and cover the content quite well. If you put in a decent effort throughout the semester for this subject, then it is also very possible to get 90+! Overall, a very rewarding subject.

Contrary to what is said, the new format is great. Terry is an amazing teacher, the Tute are really useful and the exams are well done. Just need to work well, it is a complicated subject of course but it couldn't be better taught.
