This unit can be quite boring and dry, and the content is often not directly related to accounting. However, the resources provided for this unit are sufficient, but at the same time are not excessive. The readings are informative and do not take too much time, while the lectures too are short and to the point. The textbook is also written by the unit-coordinator, and is not written particularly well, as some sections are quite difficult to read. The assessments were also fair. The weekly assessable quizzes were not difficult if you paid attention to the topic's content. The assignment was also fair and not too difficult, however it did require a significant amount of time and effort in researching specific companies GRI and <IR> reports. It would probably be more beneficial for future graduates if the assignment was more focused on financial accounting/reporting. My major gripe with this unit is the unit co-ordinator Professor Donleavy. He doesn't respond to students queries, posts other students marks on Moodle, and makes no attempt to properly explain important or difficult concepts in the lecture. Even when he does respond to students, the answers are very short, such as "i'll check" or "okay". He frequently refers to "if you want to get a credit ...", implying that it is basically impossible for students to achieve a credit grade, which hurts the morale and aspirations of high-achieving students. Unfortunately, AFM301 is a mandatory unit for students studying/majoring in accounting, so you just have to grit your teeth and bear it. The Professor aside, the unit is bearable and some topics, such as that on the Conceptual Framework, Accounting Standards, Accounting Research, and Fraud, are quite interesting and educational.
