Reviews

I am in disbelief at the poor quality of this unit and the subpar efforts of its teaching staff. Biochemistry and molecular biology are very complex topics and to combine them into one hellscape of a subject is not acceptable. The lectures are prerecorded, so you are expected to watch them before your allocated lecture slot, where they assume you know and understand the content without actually teaching it. The tutorials were run online this semester, which can be summarised by the emails we received saying "no live tutorials this week, make your own zooms to work through the task" and then still grade us on attendance + contribution. Practicals were extremely dry and my demo often rushed through the content, just giving out answers rather than explaining and working through the content. Assessment tasks are as vague as possible and then the markers act surprised when so many students receive poor marks. To sum up the above, 50% of the cohort is below a passing grade. For half of the cohort to fail the midsem exam is indisputable evidence of the poor teaching quality in this unit. Numerous students have said that this unit has affected their mental health so badly that they have been brought to tears. It is a shame that this subject is a requirement for the completion of the medical science stream. Both of these topics CAN be made interesting, but this unit chooses to not do this. The assessable content is unnecessarily complex in comparison to the content delivered in lectures. This review may be my opinion, however I have shown the content, assessment tasks and exams to people who have completed degrees specialising in biochemistry / molecular biology and they have said this subject is unnecessarily complex and poorly run, especially for a second year subject. I wish you all the best in getting through this subject and still be sane.
