Reviews
Essential introduction to human biology but HBOnline content was excessive. Teaching was a hit and miss and the marking was pure unreasonable.

HBonline is rubbish. a lot of content, make sure to stay on top

It seems to have a lot to remember. But it should be easy if you understand the rulers of how human body works. For example, living creature fit the environment. Overall I think it is fun. Love the lab!

A great unit of study. not hard at all if you put in the time and effort. the practicals are long and kind of boring sometimes.

A decently paced first-year biology course that shouldn't be too tricky for most science students. I hadn't previously done HSC biology but the course was very easy to follow and very easy to get good marks in. All of the lecturers are at the very least decent, although it can get a bit annoying switching around between lecturer and lecturer as they do all have different teaching styles. Don't really need to use the textbook or study ridiculously - as long as you are somewhat consistent throughout the semester in your study and leave yourself time to review the content (there is quite a bit of it) you should be fine. The labs were enjoyable of most if not all of the demos are very helpful and knowledgeable people.

This was a really hard unit overall. Although a lot was HSC biology content there was unnecessary content on HB online that we were encouraged to learn. I got a D in the course and didn't look at HB online once, proving that it was a waste of time really. I never did it because its format and layout was so poor and hard to understand. Overall, a really stressful unit and I think there was too much content!!!!

Too much irrelevant information on HBonline and HBconnect, essential for the pre-lab quizzes but was not in the finals. Be careful finals contain materials briefly mentioned by lecturers using words but not in slides.

This was my favourite unit in semester 1. Maybe more than half of the unit was based on HSC Biology topics which helps if you've done it before. But even if you haven't the unit is manageable as long as you learn and understand everything they say in the lectures. The exam was mostly based on what they provide you with, I didn't find I needed to consult my textbook, unless you don't understand a concept. I found the lecturers fantastic in their teaching as their explanations were very engaging.

Doesn't include the ENTIRE topic....!

Great subject -- gives a very comprehensive overview of the human body in terms of basic anatomy (structure) and physiology (function). Don't be afraid to take this if you didn't do biology in high school. It's hard, but so is BIOL1001 (concepts). There isn't a good intro to biology subject at USyd unfortunately, so you'll need to do some catchup somewhere! This is a phenomenal primer if you're planning to go on to do subjects in the medical sciences disciplines. #1 Tip: Don't be overwhelmed by the HB Online material. There's a tonne of stuff there, but you don't need to know it for the final exam. Cram it before your prac quiz, then forget it until second year! Final exam is lecture material only =)
