Reviews

Overall, this course was interesting. I enjoyed learning about the different concepts in lectures but didn't think the practicals were up to scratch. Some of the mini test questions were not thought of well when they were written, which created confusion for the students in the actual mini tests. Also, some of the practicals were really short and didn't really help overall with the course content. The final exam, however, was very easy!

Fantastic Class, Learn the Basics to Biology, Genes, Cells & Evolution! 100% go for it!

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2017

I did not find the content of this subject (primarily cell biology) interesting at all but feel that it is important to know for other biology subjects. The lecturers were great and enthusiastic and the practicals were laid back. Tutorials were useful but a bit rushed (not that much time for questions etc.). Make sure you put some effort into the 4 mini tests as they will form around 40% of your grade even though they don't feel like a lot individually. Final exam is a lot of content and is very difficult to study for at the last moment so commence study a lot earlier. Definitely attempt as many past exam questions as you can as some questions repeat exactly or almost exactly.

A good course, but a bit boring at times as it covers really easy content - minus the PCR stuff

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2017

This class is super interesting but is content heavy. I found the best way to follow this class and stay on top of it, was to summarise the chapters in the textbook (painful I know but incredibly helpful). The pracs can be a bit boring but tutes were super helpful. If you've done high school biology, this class will be a breeze. Before the final exam, go over all your Deep Though Q's as they tend to pop up again ! Mini tests are helpful in figuring out where you stand in the class so take them seriously! Overall, loved the class and ask tutors if you get stuck - they are always more than willing to help you

fuck this class

I really enjoyed BIOL1020! If you keep up to date, its a reasonably engaging and interesting class.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2015

The course content was very interesting. Some of the lecturing staff were very engaging. Each lecture was self contained and so there was no issue for students who wanted to swap between streams to suit their timetables. Weekly pracs were a bit of a drag, but they were generally interesting and sometimes finished early! The mini quiz multiple choice questions were taken straight from the textbook readings, and so it is recommended to take time just before the exam to redo all the relevant MCQs and make sure you know the answers to all. For the SAQs, think deeply, critically and technically about what the answer will be, and then try to memorise the key points of each answer. Note that some of these deep thinking questions turned up on the final! On the topic of the final, anything from lecture slides or the practical class is fair game (even if it is just one concept on one slide!). PASS was generally fun, and OL was a good means of review, although at times tiring. Also readings were tiring: they are worth doing if you are struggling, but if you are short on time there are useful summaries at the end of each chapter.

This course was pretty interesting but very time consuming. Definitely show up to all the lectures and classes as it really does make a difference. Pracs are pretty easy if you do your pre-prac reading and questions. Its good to go to the PASS classes just for the worksheets more than anything else. Make sure to do all of the weekly quizzes and PASS classes as questions from them are put in the final exam. The final exam is pretty hard, everyone I knew did a lot worse than they expected so make sure you study hard and do the past exam papers.

Introductory but detailed course on biology. The labs were engaging and never felt like a chore despite no marks being directly attached to them. The online textbook was actually very useful in covering important concepts throughout the semester.
