Reviews

I have to say, this subject took a while for me to appreciate. At first, it was quite hard to see the connection between each week's topic -- and that's because there isn't really one. After about the sixth week, I realised that it's really just a course showcasing the diversity of what people throughout history have thought about Philosophy, such as its aims, methods, purposes, and so on. Having a different lecturer each week was great, and felt refreshing compared to other courses at the university. There is something in it for every Philosophy major, and the final essay gives you almost complete freedom to write whatever you think about Philosophy as a thing. Some weeks are a drag when you're not into the thinker/topic/reading, but overall a great way to wrap up the major. My tutor James was also excellent and great at clarifying any concepts we didn't quite get out of the readings or lectures.

Being a capstone subject a very broad range of philosophers are discussed, so there's really something for everyone. I found the seminars were generally engaging, especially since everyone had a slightly different background. Francois was a very responsive and engaging lecturer/ tutor and did a brilliant job in guiding interesting seminar discussions.
