All of these 'applications' and 'characterisation' subjects are essentially the same in that you get to choose from a list of modules available that semester. Separating the modules into subjects is just a formality. Be sure to find out the availability of each module before you choose it, because some only run as rarely as once every two years, and you want to choose the topics you're most interested in and will be the most useful to you. Each module has its own assignments and exam, with the exam date being decided upon by the individual lecturer, who often asks the students if they have a preference. In semester 2, the modules usually end by September so that people can focus on their theses and talks. (P.S. I took this subject in 2015, but that doesn't appear in the drop-down menu, so I'll select semester 1, 2017, which is the oldest option available.)
