Reviews

A bit harder than BIOL10004. However, if you love bio, it's not that hard. If you took Bio HL in IB, you already know some of the content. In BIOL10004 the IB helped a lot more compared to this subject. The pracs were much more interesting in my opinion. There will be tests in the pracs with little time given, so not only revise the prac sheets beforehand, but take notes during the prac and be sure to listen to your demonstrator, they are there to help. The assignment was easier than the BIOL10004, even though it looked complicated at first. Be sure to take good notes and use them for the online quizzes. I listen to the recordings so it does help to take better notes. I found that the quizzes were easier in this subject, but keep in mind that I learned to take better notes this semester. Workshops seemed more fun this time around, but it might be because of the friend group I had. Be sure to socialize! I read more of the essential readings this time around, but honestly, do not stress to much about it.

The content was really interesting and well taught. The assignments and tests weren't too hard and there was support whenever you needed it. The tutors in this subject and BIOL10004 were really helpful and contributed to making the subject enjoyable.

Great subject with interesting content

Personally, I found this subject much more difficult than BIOL10004. There is less content but more emphasis on application rather than rote learning. Keep up to date with lectures and do as many practice questions as you can (especially for Modules 1 and 2). Pracs are much easier than first sem and easier to score well in. Try your best in these!

The genetics section can be tough but do lots of practise questions and youll be fine!

Felt like less content than BIOL10004, more emphasis on conceptual understanding and application, but keep on top of lectures! The pracs are also different to Sem1, mark allocations were more transparent and more rarely on the questions in the prac handout. The sample exam is a very good indication of the final exam, so very worth doing. I found the final exam quite fair and enough time to complete, i found the hardest questions to be on the module about the algae/diatoms stuff so worth putting in some effort to memorise the details of that module.

Genetics is pretty challenging to me compared to Cells & Organisms. Perhaps I don't really like genes stuff so I find it very hard to grasp some of the concepts taught. However, lectures are pretty fun and interesting. I don't really enjoy tuto ials but maybe it's just my tutor. Make sure to get good scores for the online assesments as they give a total of 20% weightage. Final exam is okay but most students (including me) didn't have time to finish the whole paper. So better learn to work on time managemen!

Subject is very interesting but content is very heavy. Would not recommend taking this as breadth but possible. Not very first semester student friendly (mid year intake), was expected to know how everything works even if we were just starting our first semester. A lot of online test, pre- and post practicals. Also a lot of memorising. Not all the tutor will be able to answer your questions (covers very broad topics from genetics to animal diversity to protist and fungi). Have to stay on track, very hard to catch up once you fall behind. Readings are very important (not so much of the smart book), it's in exams and test but covered in lectures!

Structure was all over the place. They aren't very clear with the assessments and the lecture content doesn't flow at times. Then again it is Biology which is the only good thing about it. The pracs are super easy if you prepare well. Just be sure to do constant revision and don't fall behind.

Super subject. Only complaint is that I found tutes pretty pointless.
