Having not done any French before, this subject was an excellent introduction to French and covered the basics really well. The tutor was very nice and ensured that our classes were fun and enjoyable. The assessment tasks were not too difficult either. I highly recommend French 1 to anyone interested in learning a new language.

Loved this subject, my favourite this sem (it was my breadth). My tutor was absolutely lovely. It was very well-run and you do learn a lot. It's also easy to make friends in this class as there are a lot of pair/group exercises and there are two tutorials per week (both two hours long).

I did the winter intensive for this course, and it was really, really enjoyable. I would recommend for anyone looking to do a breadth. I would highly highly recommend to do it during the winter like I did (3 weeks and 2 days goes by VERY fast, and you finish all the assessment tasks before the start of sem 2 - unlike essay assessed winter subjects). Especially during COVID times where everything is conveniently online and there's nothing else to do in lockdown, this subject was a blessing in disguise. Teachers all lovely, and the classes are constructed really well.

I has never learned French before (or any other language!) and found this subject really clear and easy to follow. Plus a lot more relaxed and fun than many of my other Arts classes. You are doing a lot of speaking activities with classmates (which means its a really great class to make friends in) and there are no lectures, so I think this is what makes the atmosphere more chilled out. Also, having a lot of smaller exams every couple of weeks is actually really helpful in forcing you to continually study and pick-up the language quicker.

Having never done French before, the pace of this subject was pretty good and fast, and I was surprised by how much I learned in just 12 weeks. The small-ish class size without lectures was perfect for a subject like this. Make sure you practise with friends and at home, revise regularly, and maybe use an app like Duolingo/Babbel/whatever to help you along. Bear in mind that apps don't really teach grammar, just vocabulary. (P.S. Things have probably changed since I did this subject in semester 1, 2013. The drop-down menu only goes as far back as semester 1, 2017, so I'll select that.)

I had done some french before so I found the subject pretty easy, but judging on others and myself, the pace was good while we did manage to cover a lot! Our instructor was lovely, and let us have a break during the two hour seminars sometimes as it could get a bit tedious. Attendance is important, as it was sometimes hard to catch up if u missed a class. Overall good subject and I liked that there were many smaller assessments instead of a huge end of sem exam.

Reasonably chill and relaxed instruction, not a hard subject to do well in. Quite enjoyable (did someone say movie?), as long as you don't stress over all the assessments (there are quite a few). On the flip side the final exam is quite short and not too bad; no need to cram much. The pace of content covered is quite fast, but it doesn't feel too forced or harsh.

Wonderful introduction to French language and culture! Really fun subject structure too, so it didn't really even feel like hard work!

Huge amount of content covered in 12 weeks but not too hard to get H1 :) quite enjoyable as well.

i had a great tutor but joined the subject about 5 weeks in so it was a bit of a struggle, still enjoyable though
