Reviews

Result- 82 H1. The only H1 thus far in my Biomedicine degree (I am 50% completed). I really enjoyed CHEM10006. You learn about the chemistry applicable to life sciences, namely reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, acid base equilibrium & redox reactions. The main highlight was organic chemistry (nucleophilic substitution & elimination of SN1 SN2 E1 E2, nucleophilic acyl substitution of carboxylic acids, nucleophilic addition of aldehydes & ketones with hemiacetal & an introduction to keto enol tautomers), introduction to carbohydrates, amino acids, lipids, nucleic acids & the chemistry of important transition metal complexes (haemoglobin, myoglobin & porphyrin complexes). I found the organic chemistry component useful & important for my second year chemistry subjects which I took in 2023, namely CHEM20018 & CHEM20026 (See my reviews for both subjects). The former goes into more depth of enolate ion synthesis & has a module on biological medicinal chemistry extending carbohydrates, lipid & polyketide biosynthesis & introduction to heterocyclic compounds. The latter has useful topics on information retrieval & nucleic acid biosynthesis & amino acids peptides. These topics were useful for BIOM20001.

An interesting and excellent subject overall. The lecturers were engaging and the practicals were enjoyable. The tutorial questions and mock exam papers that they provided prepared me well for the final exam. Although most of the content is new and not covered in high school/VCE chemistry, if you keep up to date with the lectures and tutorials, then you can do well.

Grade: 90. It's a very tough subject and the online lectures + large tutorial groups mean it can be tough to find help. You have to be proactive and not miss out on anything. Do past papers to get a feel; you'll realize anything (quite literally) can be tested.

This subject would be so interesting if studying offline! Online is really boring and not engaging at all

I found this to be the easiest subject out of the lot. I got an easy 94 by doing less work than I had to do for BIOL 10002. It just depends on how you look at the subject. However make sure that you know every topic well and do the tutorial questions like your life depended on it

Well-organised but traumatic and wayyyyyy more difficult than year 12 chem. I found it fast-paced. If you fall behind (like I did) you're screwed, because each thing builds on the last.

Very different from year 12 chemistry and is a lot more difficult conceptually. Once you do enough questions and past papers everything will start to make sense. Overall, highly interesting subject but demands quite a bit of time and effort.

Pretty interesting subject

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2018

Super fun if you know how to study for it!

A somewhat difficult subject with many concepts that are hard to get a good grasp on, but if the necessary effort is applied then the subject can actually be quite interesting. Though some of the content is extremely dry and at times even boring, there are some topics that have real-life implications and are fascinating.
