Reviews

My favorite unit so far (second year student here). I regret not attending the lectures in person more because the convenor made them so fun and much better than watching online recordings. Perfect for someone new to the sciences as well as experienced bio kids. Amazing assignments. Loved it and wish i could retake it honestly.

Honestly best unit I have done. Michael is possibly the best lecture I have ever had and will ever have. There was a lot to learn and keep up with but I always looked forward to watching the lectures. I graduated 4 years ago and didn't even do a science subject during HSC so I was a little worried about starting a science degree but honestly I feel so much better prepared now and confident about my chosen degree. I can say with confidence I love what I am studying and its thanks to this unit and of course Michael.

I loved this unit so much. Michael is an amazing lecturer and does things throughout the lecture to keep it interesting. The unit guide description gives a really good summary of it. Lectures - The content of the lectures is really similar to the content of HSC biology, so anyone who has done bio will find this unit a breeze. Even if you haven't done bio in depth before, Michael explains things really well and tells you whether he wants you to know it or not. - If you get stuck, the lecture recordings are always there for your revision. However, you can't rely on them, as they only provide audio and slides, no video of the actual lecture, therefore you'll miss out on any "experiments" he does. - Because of COVID, there were heaps of changes in the way units were running. Michael's lectures provided us with some entertainment while we were all stuck at home, and gave a sense of that we were at uni, as he kept doing his "experiments" during his lectures Assessments - The assessments are really simple and ease you into the unit. The essay requires a decent amount of work, but the topics are all very interesting. Because of COVID, the structure of what uni was changed. Out of all the units I was doing, Michael seemed to care the most, as every week or two, he would post on iLearn and ask us how we were going. At the end of the unit, I actually felt sad that it had ended and that there were no more lectures. If you enjoy biology or science in general, this is an awesome unit to do. Would recommend to everyone!!

A really interesting and fun unit, but TONNES of content. Michael the lecturer is great, good content and engaging. However I often found myself replaying parts of the lectures which included diagrams because some were quite complicated but rushed over. Wouldn't recommend this unit if you didn't do bio for the HSC because it would be A LOT of new concepts to learn in a short period of time + content overload.

Amazing lecturer, and an amazing course. If you have done bio in high school, you'll smash it. Tip - try and remain on top of the content.

An excellent unit with a fantastic lecturer! Engaing, fun, and always interesting! I never did biology in highschool but this unit inspired me to pursue a major in Advanced Biology! A note on the unit title, though: While you do cover solid foundational knowledge of human biology, it also covers a breadth of human-centric biology and their impacts to and from the environment. A fascinating topic for everyone, regardless of what you are studying!

Can be felt as content heavy. But fun lecturer, need to work on essay bit by bit.

Great subject! Easy to understand and do well in. Michael is a fantastic professor!

There was a lot of content so you really need to keep up and make sure you understand everything, but this was such an interesting unit! The lecturer (Michael) was so engaging and funny and really made the content understandable and fun. You can do very well in the essay if you put in the work, and the other assignments are simple. Keep up with the quizzes to help with the exam!!! Don't do this unit if you don't have a genuine interest in human biology. It may be a planet unit, but it's certainly not a bludge!!! Michael says it's the hardest 100 level biology unit; based on the sheer amount of content, I'd say that's about right, especially without doing high school biology.

This unit is content heavy but was very interesting. The amazing, passionate lecturer makes it engaging and always cracks jokes! Make sure you do all the quizzes as it will help you in the final exam.
