Reviews

Structure of the unit: 1 lab journal, 1 group presentation (around Wk 9), and a final exam Labs are held every fortnight. It mostly revolves around the group presentation (and you don't get to choose your group), so your experience may depend on the type of people you end up working with. Questions for the lab journal are shown in the lab, briefly discussed (or sometimes not at all), and you have to complete the rest on your own. Very unlike the hand-holding in lab journals that they do in PSYC1101 & PSYC1102. The first four weeks of the content is very technical, revolves a lot around scientific techniques used in neuroscience--may be a bit dry and hard to keep track of. There are demonstrations during lectures which makes visualizing it easier. The rest 8 weeks is mostly looking at various cognitive abilities (ie literacy, numeracy) and studying the neural bases of these activities. Lots of previous experiments and case studies mentioned that prove that a brain area/neuron is involved, can be hard to keep track of. It is a beneficial unit esp for a Neuro major. You just need to put more effort into regularly revising and consolidating the material instead of letting it pile up till end of semester. Content and scientific jargon builds upon a lot of technical stuff you learn in weeks 1-4

Bit strange there are no other reviews so I guess I'll write one. The content was definitely interesting. It's a core subject for both psychology and neuroscience (my two majors), so it was rewarding to see that intersection. The workload is alright (2 hr lecture per week) + some labs. The group project was ok, but I think that's just because I got a good group. Thankfully, it's only 20%. The lab journal took a lot longer than I expected, and my grade wasn't what I hoped for. It's due right at the end of semester, so be weary I suppose. But overall, an enjoyable unit.
