Reviews

I hated this unit more than anything in my life. The lectures respectfully were awful to understand if you aren’t math inclined. I have math teachers in my family and they were confused, however, taught it significantly better than the lectures. Ignoring the lectures with a shit ton of study I got roughly an 85 in that exam. BUT at your own risk some tutors are downright spiteful and will just give the entire class 50 in the THIRTY FIVE PERCENT ASSIGNMENT bc they feel like it, whilst others get 80 in other classes for doing the bare minimum. It was ridiculous and I felt like I shouldn’t have had to teach myself that much content. The sheer discrepancy between assignment marks and exam marks says enough that success is highly placed on how lucky you get with your tutor. Ours refused to answer any questions at all about the assignments bc it would be considered “cheating”, whilst other classes got an entire rundown and I had to get info from them. So stupid, I pulled my hair out but ended on a high distinction from grinding until I cried for 3 weeks. If you’re naturally a math genius and get a good tutor you may like it but this unit really disappointed me as from week 3 onwards I didn’t want to be there anymore and had high expectations.

Troy does his best to make what is some truly very boring content engaging, and it does help. I did ATAR methods, and a lot of the calculations were easier/similar to that. It is alot of content though, so staying up to date is very important. It's not really something you can cram (not that that stopped me). If you aren't a mathy person, you can still easily pass. Most of the quiz questions and half the exam are not maths questions, and it's all MCQ. My only gripe is that there are barely any practice questions (4 practice quizzes + 1 mini practice exam), which did not feel like nearly enough. The lab exercises don't have answers on LMS that I could find. Go to the labs if you want a good grade.

I love Troy. He is very funny, engaging and willing to help. He also explains the content well to ensure you understand it. However all of my friends doing this unit are STRUGGLING. I was told week 1 I "didnt have to be very mathy to do well". it is a lie. Me doing general math in year 12 is struggling. If you hate formulas, remembering what to do with formulas for specific questions, or calculating stuff in general that requires a lot of practice u will cry. Although my labs helped me INCREDIBLY, they allowed you to practice scenarios and questions and made me a lot more confident. solid 3/5

Troy is a fantastic lecturer and UC. The content is reasonably hard and time consuming but I found that Troy was very willing to help and made the assessments easy to pass. This unit outlines the fundamentals for inferential statistics which is very important in psychology and for future units. As long as you keep on top of the lectures, and do the practice quizzes the concepts are relatively easy to grasp. The exam was all multi choice and the lab report was pretty easy.

Really important unit! Troy is a great lecturer. Teaches the foundational concepts in inferential statistics which is expanded upon in 3301 and 3302. I wish I had invested more time so I could truly wrap my head around everything. A year later I still find myself going back to the lectures to understand better. Difficult and math-heavy unit, but necessary. I recommend practising questions and asking lots of questions to wrap your head around things. Relying on lectures alone is not enough to do well here. If you're pursuing honours/masters in psychology, you'll thank yourself later that you paid attention!

Unit sucks overall. The lecturer is pretty funny and engaging though tends to ramble off topic and skip over important steps in the formulas. The person who ran my lab was not helpful and acted like they didn't want to be there making it very hard to go over things. The lab report is a bit unorganised with limited information given. Ended up relying on YouTube to learn anything for this unit, would not recommend taking.

Best lecturer in psychological science so far. Has a good way to introduce students who just started in the major to statistics and lab reports.

this unit sucks, the content is just not exciting but it helpful information to have when reading and analysing other journal articles. Troy is good, tries hard to make it more interesting and is more than happy to help

The lecturer Troy is great he is funny, engaging and passionate about what he does. However the unit sucks majorly. I still don't understand why I need to know what a z-score is to be a psychologist but apparently I do. The statistics and maths is so hard and confusing :(((

did this unit because it was a core unit for criminology which was a bit frustrating because i explicitly went to uni to NOT do maths. past reviews have said it's easy but is actually quiet confusing if it's not your strongest point. personally, this unit should not be compulsory for crim students. however, troy is a funny guy, talks about his cat which is cute.
