Reviews

This unit was awesome. Jorge is a great lecturer and tutor and is clearly very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the content he is teaching. He was approachable and very helpful. I did more poorly on the essay than I was expecting and he was happy to meet with me and give me detailed feedback and advice on how to better approach the unit. Tutorials were full of lively and engaging discussions and were probably the most fun I've had in a university classroom. The scope of the unit is very well selected and gives genuine insight into the social sciences. The weakest link in the unit was causation: Jorge acknowledged that the lectures on the topic weren't adequate to give students a thorough understanding, and he compensated for it by restructuring the exam so that it wouldn't be assessed. I highly recommend this unit to anybody studying philosophy (it does count for the major) and it would be a great elective for anybody studying a social science, or even economics. That being said, it does require a fair bit of reading and I can imagine students unfamiliar with philosophy might struggle, but I found it incredibly rewarding and well worth the effort.
