Reviews

Good subject. Remember to review lecture slides thoroughly

Anonymous, Autumn session, 2016

Not hard to understand. However, several definitions to learn for the final exam.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2014

Fairly enjoyable subject. Content is very simple and requires just the memorization of definitions. Very reliant on the textbook. The lecturer was great, but you could probably skip the lectures, read the slides, and learn the same amount.

This subject was pretty simple. A lot of the subject was learning the definitions of terms. It would be a breeze if you did business in your HSC.

Your mark in this subject is really put down to two components, the exams (midsemester and final) and the group assignment. Like any subject which involves a group assignment, your final mark for the subject will largely, and rather unfortunately, depend on the quality of the group you end up with. Thankfully, I had a great group and we were able to achieve a mark of 93 for the assignment which had a total weighting of 20%. The average was about a credit to a distinction. Make sure your group starts working on this early as everyone is automatically assigned individual parts which must come together to form the final marketing plan (e.g. one student is given product and price, another is given promotion and so forth). Ensure that the parts are not repetitive, but rather, complimentary and supportive of one another. The group assignment has an individual component as well, which makes up an additional 10%. In this component, you are asked to describe and evaluate your efforts in the construction of both the marketing plan and the presentation, and they ask that it stays below one thousand words. I ended up receiving 100% for this part, as a few other students did. The layout of the exams are quite straight forward to say the least. The mid semester exam comprises of twenty multiple choice, five definition questions and a short answer question in response to a provided case study. The additional components in the final exam was an essay, forty multiple choice, ten definitions and a short answer which is interconnected to a provided case study. Make sure you purchase the updated textbook and ideally, updated notes that are sourced from this updated textbook as there are technical differences in definitions that the lecturers are aware of and make an effort to include these in the exams to catch students using older editions off. For example, the old textbook doesn't use the 'environmental' facet in the PESTL framework, whereas the new textbook does, due to the increasing environmental concern that businesses are facing. The textbook is also super useful as it contains a glossary of definitions, which are arguably the most important part of the course. Memorising definitions will ensure a high mark - bring it altogether in the short answers and the final essay i.e. noticing the overlapping concepts between the definitions and you are on a high distinction. I received a high distinction for 24108.
