Reviews and tips for SCLG1001

It was a really boring and annoying subject. It pretty much made me lose all interest in sociology and that's saying something considering I've always been really passionate about it. DO NOT take it as a filler! This subject is way too intense for that! You get a ridiculous amount of homework every week. I wouldn't recommend taking it unless you're pursuing a career in sociology in which case you'll just have to put up with it, 1002 is better.

Most dry and boring unit of study to do for a rather interesting subject.

I found this unit quite theoretical and boring. Fiona is a good lecturer and the unit has potential to be more interesting if it was more practical and you learnt about sociological issues themselves rather than just theory. It is quite easy to do well in if you are willing to put in the work.

Where do I start with SCLG1001? Each week you have to read 20-50 pages from an extremely boring, dry and content-heavy textbook. You summarise these pages into 'worksheets' which are used as discussion points in the tutorial. There's also a weekly quiz which makes you go back and find completely random and very VERY specific sentences in the textbook - the only beneficial part is that these exact quiz questions form part of the exam. The only part of this subject which I actually enjoyed was the weekly video lectures. They explained the topics in an interesting way and effectively clarified the weekly readings. The actual weekly lecture was completely boring and irrelevant to the actual content, making me dislike the subject even more. Overall, I found this subject extremely boring and honestly, a waste of time. I would have preferred to do another, more interesting subject, however, SCLG1001 is a pre-requisite unit for some courses or second and third-year subjects.
