Reviews
I'm torn in giving this review. This unit was ultimately lots of fun. Every assignment, apart from being subject to vague parameters surrounding form ("narration"/"interview"/"general podcast"), could be done on literally any topic. It's a great unit for self-directed creatives. It's not such a great choice for individuals who like more direction and structure. The lectures and tutorials offered some nuggets of good advice here and there, but were ultimately pretty useless. The tutors are experienced and fun (almost all of them are industry professionals in podcasting), but a bit disorganised and inconsistent. The markers tended to impose additional marking criteria that wasn't disclosed to us students prior to handing in our assignments, or sometimes just plain contrary to what we had been told - for example, our first assignment's brief repeatedly stated that the reflection was not marked on substance at all, but could only potentially affect marks by drawing the marker's attention to particular challenges faced in recording/content. As it turns out, almost everyone lost marks on the reflection for not being "broadcast quality", though this standard was never specified. The marking is additionally pretty harsh for an arts unit - they will not give HDs unless they deem the podcast to be "broadcast quality". I was told that my low-HD assignments were among the highest marking pieces. Overall, however, this unit is enjoyable, and it's pretty rewarding to have some finished podcast clips to share.
