Reviews

I did this subject in the second semester of my first year. It is a good subject overall and you learn a range of very useful and applicable concepts. IT can be tricky at times trying to figure out how to go about some things though given a lack of clarity in some of the material. Its really important to try and find a good tutor for this one.

Was interesting, but final assessment is a bit ridiculous

Engaging lecturer and my tutor was a life saver. Content on slides can get a bit dry but I found tutorials extremely useful to understand the concepts and work through problems in class.

Very difficult unit if you aren't a maths person or didn't do maths in high school but all things considered this is one of the best compulsory units USYD's business school offers. brandon.uniedu@gmail.com. If you have a decent maths background you'll be fine. There's little point in attending lectures or tutes, the textbook is better than both 90% of the time, just watch the recording right before assessments since Richard Henry will state the answers i.e. how to do the assignment.

Good opportunity for free marks but certainly hard if you haven't done maths at high school. I personally think the USYD commerce degree needs another maths and stats unit in conjunction with this.

A mix of math (matrices,) and statistics. Definitely not hard if you are a math person. Otherwise, need to practice a lot.

In my case both lecturer and tutor were foreigners (China), and their lack of Australian accents makes it extremely difficult to comprehend what they're trying to say to you, ended up watching all the lecture recording by Gerlack. Also, because a large majority of students doing this unit are foreigners, and their math skills are better than us locals, these foreign lecturers and tutors skim over critical content that we can't understand because they assume that we have already learnt it,. Makes life a lot harder, especially when cramming right before exams because you get nothing out of weekly classes. Coming from a Band 6 2U and 3U maths student.

Pretty disappointed by the way this subject was run. Exam marking is pretty inconsistent as certain markers can be lenient while others are extremely harsh (the unit coordinator even implicitly admitted this). Some review questions for exams are provided, however the format of these are often very different from that of the exams. The practice questions for the final exams were mostly just the questions on the lecture slides.
