Reviews

Enjoyed the first two modules although it does need a bit of chemistry knowledge(on polarity/convelent bonds/just organic chemistry knowledge). THird module was a bit rote and ecology was not as boring as I thought but wasn't anything intersting either but both were relatively easy to study for. Did not enjoy the scientific report assessment at all but otherwise pretty chill final, easier than biol1008 final in my opinion.

Really fun subjects with excellent lecturers and tutors.

Honestly just incredibly fucking boring

Super confusing week 1 lectures, specially about biopolymers. Doesn't explain what she is teaching, and assumes lots of chemistry knowledge. Would not recommend unless you are confident in chemistry and biology. The first lecturer is also pretty boring and only gives you information without any interesting facts/applications.

Pretty poor subject. Tried to cram in way too much content into one subject. Spend more money Usyd and make a few biology options.

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2017

A lot of content, hard if you have never done any chemistry. Practicals weren't super useful. Unfortunately a prerequisite for a lot of science majors.

A lot of information to remember, but it is relatively straightforward. The modules are diverse and not related to each other, so you'll probably be bored with some of them (cough Ecology). Practicals were the worst, they looked fun on paper, but were absolutely tedious and disorganized, take advantage of the 80% attendance requirement. Assignments are quite straightforward and leniently marked. A lot of people say there is a lot of chemistry, there is some biochemistry, but it's limited to the genetics module.

tons of information to learn, not easy to meet requirements of the unit as instructions given were not clear enough.

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2017

Difficult if you have no prior chem experience. Overall very stuffed course which leads to a superficial understanding of a lot of concepts. Requires a lot of dedication which is made even more difficult if you aren't interested in sections of the content.

If you don't like chemistry, then DONT do this subject!!! it should be called CHEM1007 not BIOL1007
