Reviews

Pretty good first year psychology subject. I really struggled to understand the behavioural neuroscience section... lecturer for that section was not very clear (Jason) and those topics are already quite full-on and not straightforward. Exam was hard for me, I was very tight on time. I preferred MBB2 only because the topics covered interest me more and so was easier to understand for me (e.g. developmental, clinical, social psyc).

Well taught subject. Some modules a bit longer and exhausting than others, but overall pretty manageable content. Tutorials were very relevant to lecture content and assessments had clear criteria. You do well on the essay as long as you do the assessment literacy module (a hurdle) which basically allows you to mark practice essays and makes it very helpful to write your own pretty well. The teaching staff a super friendly and approachable too.

A pretty good introduction to psychology. The exam was pretty simple, and the essay assessment seemed intimidating at first but wasn't that bad. It's a well taught subject (especially Jason's Behavioural Neuroscience and Dr Chris' Research Methods.) Really liked the subject but sometimes what needed to be remembered was unclear e.g. the visual perception and the learning and cognition experiments. Tutorials were fascinating and helpful in adding to understanding of the content. I'd recommend taking it though, the content is quite interesting!

Great introductory subject for psych

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2017

Most likeable subject I had done in 2019. The neuroscience part requires some effort but definitely worth the time going through all the lectures and would be easy to spot the patterns and master the module. It is absolutely fine without biology background. The Sensation and Perception, as well as Learning and Cognition modules can be abstract at points, but would be easier to do well with some understanding rather than just memorising.

Definitely a WAM booster! The content whilst might be a bit much, the exams are extremely simple

WAM booster, but I didn't find it particularly interesting. Jason's stuff is extremely content heavy and dull for anyone who has no interest in neuroscience. Simon's stuff is remarkably abstract, and devolves into what I felt like was a continuation of Jason's unit. Meredith's unit was quite relaxed and perhaps the most interesting at all (learning and behaviour). The research modules (Chris' online unit) are not difficult at all. Given the nature of the exam, if you nail your assignments, not too difficult to get a H1, even without understanding all of Jason's material.

Interesting subject to do as a first-year breadth. Contents are generally a whole lot of facts that you need to remember, especially in the behavioural neuroscience topic. Simon's part is quite abstract and his readings were messy to handle, but Meredith's learning and cognition part is very well taught. Tutes were fascinating. Exam is straightforward. Overall a good introductory subject to psych, as well as a generally rewarding experience

So so, maybe good of you major Psyc. The subject can be divided into 3 parts: The first part is more like biology than psychology: You studied the name and function of various brain/neuron network parts. This part is so so. The 2nd part is about perception and quite vague, couple with the fact that the lecturer for this chapter didn't teach it well, very difficult to understand. The last part is the best part, it talk mainly about memory and the lecturer is very good.

First few weeks are pretty content heavy from Jason, Simon's lectures are rather abstract to listen to but overall it's a pretty good subject. Sunset assignment was kinda fun and tutorials were engaging too- Nick was an AMAZING tutor! All lecturers are very experienced, but Chris Groot tops the lot as his explanations are easiest to understand and follow along with. Make sure you study the research methods component of the course too ;)
