I am a mathematics tutor with 11 years experience, offering 'Maths is Fun' Tutoring Workshops, school holiday workshops and LANTITE prep workshops run by donations. Sessions will be available for year 3 - 12 students, with face-to-face and online options available. For face-to-face workshops, we will meet at the University of the Sunshine Coast (Sippy Downs Campus). Face-to-face sessions will be capped at 5-7 students per workshop, with more students able to join in via Zoom.
‘Maths is Fun’ Tutoring Workshops (group sessions run by donations):
Workshops will focus on building core maths skills aligned with the Australian Curriculum. Topics from the current year level will be presented in an engaging and fun manner with a focus on understanding ‘how’ and ‘why’ the maths works. Multiple strategies for solving the question will be explained, so that students have the opportunity to pick the method that works best for them. All topics can be directly applied to what the student is learning in the classroom, and students are welcome to bring tricky questions from school to the workshops. There is often much simpler ways of solving a question, and topics will be broken down in a straightforward manner. Students regularly provide feedback that sessions are fun and they are enthusiastic about continuing – often they are surprised that maths sessions can be enjoyable. Exam prep strategies and essential skills needed to succeed in exams will also be discussed, as well as addressing common challenge areas for students during exams.
Topics during the workshops include:
- Learn Australian curriculum content: Content will be related to the students year level curriculum and students are welcome to request topics each week that they are learning in class; cover a conceptual foundation and really understand why the maths works (to avoid rote learning maths); upskill on topics that students have gaps in or have struggled with in the classroom; bring a sense of fun into learning maths - every session will be engaging and interactive.
- Exam strategies: Methods of approaching the exam, strategies to complete the paper, approaches to multiple choice questions, what to do during reading time, tips if you have spare time at the end of your exam.
- Practice problem solving: worded questions, how to approach a challenging problem, methods to break down and understand the question, strategies to convert worded problems into visual representations.
- NAPLAN prep: Apply exam prep skills to NAPLAN and practice NAPLAN past questions
- Real world application: I commonly get asked: “how am I going to use this maths topic in everyday life” or “why is maths going to be useful once I finish school.” Students are more than welcome to ask these questions during the workshop if they want to know real world applications of maths.
