Chris and Toby will forever be best lecturers. You will legit compare all your other lecturers to them. While lectures have now been restructured into workshops (and you need to prepare loads before going in), I recommend not skipping as they work through questions very meticulously and have super cool demonstrations. There is some maths, but don't worry, formulas are given. You really just need to be able to know which value is related to which variable and how to rearrange equations to find a certain variable. It does cover a lot of topics in 1 semester as it is a subject that sets up the basics of chemistry for future studies. If you have done high school chem, most of the stuff is either a repeat or a slight extension. If you have not, fret not, you too can do well if you put in some effort. PASS classes are superb. They are a great way of consolidating your knowledge and what you need to know for the exams. Tutorials are a must go cause there are so many practice questions that you will have so much to use as preparation for the exams. Most lab TAs are amazing and are more than willing to help you if you ask. DO THE MOCK EXAMS! They are a very good indicator of the real ones

Well run unit with some of the best lecturers in the faculty, also a nice unit if you've already done VCE chem (although not the exact same unit)

Required a lot of reading and a bit of self learning. VCE Chem definitely helped me with this unit, and I think I would have struggled without this prior knowledge. only do this unit if chris thompson is ur lecturer

A Flipped unit that has very bad self-learning resources. You better get good at teaching yourself concepts because the pre-workshop material is not as good as the content you'll find on other online sites. Not hard but content moves fast.

they said that this unit did not require VCE chemistry, but i majorly struggled without it. workbook content did not explain how to actually answer questions and the workshops were a waste of time. the whole unit was basically self-teaching. the labs were super easy and i managed to get an average of around 80% without knowing half the concepts. apart from that, the unit was near impossible for someone with no background in chemistry. thank god i'm dropping chemistry next semester.

Very bad unit. Thank God I am not doing Bachelor of science, and instead doing engineering. All my engineering units are structured so well, you actually know what is going on and it is really fun. This unit ughhh just pathetic. Like I mean the way this unit is structured is not right. I myself have to rely mostly on prior knowledge to get through this unit, I do not know how people with no chemistry knowledge will actually survive this. First lecture, lecture hall full a week lecture it was 25% full. If you do a lab say about pH in week 4 the theory of pH in lectures are taught in week 11. I know I know it makes no sense but what can you do!! Also when you send the lecturers some emails, most of them do not even reply to you then what is the point of even asking then. They tell you to read a textbook but do not tell you properly which sections to read. Just a pathetic unit from a university as prestigious as Monash university.

lectures structured poorly and don't mention all the necessary information which means you have to spend hours on self-study just to understand what's going on. a bunch of time is wasted in workshops doing "fun" experiments, which are meant to be practical demonstrations of the content, but due to the lack of explanation of the content if you don't already know the mechanism you'll be lost. this unit doesn't list year 12 chem as a prerequisite, but if you didn't do year 12 chem I'd recommend rethinking doing this unit. I did, and I still struggled. Labs are good, you can pretty easily get 100%, or close to it, but workshops covered the actual content too poorly, especially for a unit with an exam worth 55%.

Very well structured unit with great lecturers, recommend going for the early times for Chris, however the lecturer for the kinetics part was kind of boring and got things wrong alot. For the labs make sure you aren't afraid to ask questions as all of the TA's are very understanding and knowledgeable, also use the Booklet when writing reports as there are hints. MAKE SURE YOU REALLY UNDERSTAND orbitals, especially if you are planning to do 1022

Well structured unit

Pretty alright if you've done year 12 chem. Kellie is an awesome tutor and Helmie was a great lab TA. Pretty good unit overall :)
