Reviews

An unit that held its second test (10%) on the final day of semester just before exam day, with the result of one of the assignment made available during the exam period, 10 days after the actual date for the final exam!!! Lectures mainly consist of lecturer asking questions to students that they cannot answer most of the time because students have not learnt them yet... It's not like a review lecture (like PSY236) where students were exposed to the material beforehand... You ask the lecturer questions, he won't direct or lead you or encourage you to think about the question differently or correctly; but he would let you stew and make mistakes... Hopeless unit, hopeless education system, it's all a scam, those who pay more receive more tuition system in Australia.

This is the worst unit I've ever done at Macquarie. Unfortunately it's mandatory for my degree. The content is difficult (even as someone who usually does well at other subjects) and the lecturer is incredibly rude and condescending. If you ask a question because you don't understand something, he will mock you. He switches between going over easy revision content at a glacial pace to whizzing through difficult concepts and equations which makes it incredibly hard to keep up. Luckily I had a decent tutor, which helps somewhat, but even the best tutor can't compensate for the poor form of the lecturer.

Let me start by saying that this unit is not easy and it is a lot of work. At the same time, however, it is extremely rewarding if you're willing to put in the time. I did this unit over summer 2015/2016. It was hard to keep up to date with all the lectures (sometimes 7.5 per week). If you do this unit, I strongly recommend attending the PAL sessions like I did. If it wasn't for the PAL sessions, I don't know where I'd be right now. Summary: very challenging unit, but it is rewarding because the harder you work the more you understand and the better your results will be.

It's a tough subject, but with some hard work and a little guidance it all starts to make sense.

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2012

I had an incredibly difficult time staying awake during lectures. The lecturer may have well been speaking another language.

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2015

Not only filled with mind-numbing content, but also delivered by a boring and incredibly condescending lecturer.

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2015

The lecture slides might not be much, but the lecturers repeat and stress the key points so be prepared to listen! It's fairly interesting once the material starts making sense.

Did this during summer school. Stats is a nightmare.

I did this for summer school. If you choose to do another subject with it, and want to enjoy a social life/work part or full time, you're gonna have a bad time. The first assignment and the optional test are alright, but the second assignment may cause you to a) stress cry, b) turn up to class on 3-4 hours of sleep, c) pull an all nighter, and/or d) rethink your life goals. I strongly recommend doing the lectures well ahead of time, and doing the pracs before class. The main lecturer wasn't that great, and I was playing his lectures at 3.2x the speed to keep myself awake. The non-parametric lectures were much better because they were done by a different lecturer, who made her point very clear, rather than monologuing for 20 minutes. If you try to revise for the final after you've finished your tutorials, you may be ever so slightly infuriated by the lack of solutions to the past papers. Also, it seems that the convenor has imposed age restrictions upon being qualified to be a past paper - it must be at least 10 years old before it will be posted. I will admit, however, that my experience in this subject was benefited by my tutor. My tutor did an excellent job, and clearly cared a lot about us understanding the unit. This is the one element that I will not criticise, because I could not fault it. If you do summer school, brace yourself for a 3 hour class each week. You will hate yourself for it, but try to remember that there is a light at the end of the tunnel - life without statistics, and the fact that you will watch your peers' enjoyment of the subject for over 13 weeks. It's the equivalent of ripping off the bandaid, but do expect a lot of pain, some tears, and probably a few nightmares.

It is pretty hard and the lecturer is not that great, but work hard and you can pass
