Fantastic and well-run unit. Dr Laura Hynes is a friendly and approachable unit coordinator who has genuine interest in student wellbeing. Clinical practice classes basically go over a range of skills but the main ones are vital signs, medication administration (oral mainly) and ANTT simple dressing, which are also the three skills assessed in the OSCE. You do a worksheet before each clinical practice class. The tutors were fantastic and it's a really open and nonjudgmental learning environment. The three assessments are: 1. Med calcs/hand hygiene certification - done online, med calc test is 20 questions covering oral med administration. You have unlimited attempts but have to get every question correct to pass. Basically do it in your own time and you get a certificate at the end 2. Professional reflection - was based on skills attainment in the clinical lab sessions 3. STAR response - designed to mimic selection criteria that nursing grad jobs require as part of the application process. Is based on the same topic as the professional reflection 4. OSCE - we get two skills and are assessed. You either get vital signs + oral medications, or oral medications + ANTT simple dressing. Pass/fail and one mistake you fail, but you can verbally correct yourself if you make a mistake and still pass. When you go on prac you also fill out a clinical workbook and complete a nursing assessment but your clinical facilitator will go over it all with you.
