Reviews

Basically agree with all the comments here; great subject. The course basically combines 1st year linear algebra with 2nd year statistics and builds on both here and there. I found the workload very manageable, not much different from a 2nd year maths subject (less than prob and def PFI), but it still remained very stimulating and interesting. Yao Ban has been doing this subject for a long time and it shows, he knows how to engage students and make concepts more digestible. I liked how the subject was largely self contained, striking a good balanced between theory and application (some rigour is required, but the subject isn't that super proof heavy like real analysis). Labs are satisfactory, mix of theory and R coding, and good practice. Exam is very fair (found it more fair than prob and 2nd year stats).

One of the most challenging statistics subjects ever taken. Yao ban is an excellent professor gasping the concepts of Linear Algebra and Statistics. The assignments were challenging some requires mathematical rigour proof and requires some knowledge when it comes to using R from statistics. Some of the labs were necessarily in order to complete the assignments and the overall exam. The exam overall was similar in difficulty to the recent papers 2018-2020 unlike 2017. Overall a fair subject.

One of my favourite maths subjects taken at the uni. Yao-Ban is such a great lecturer, his explanations are like having knowledge directly downloaded to your brain as his teaching style feels so natural. Content is really interesting, almost everything is proven in slides and it all connects together. Can't really comment on labs as I didn't attend most of them, though I'd assume most of the classes are satisfactory as per general math labs. Exception would be my tutor, who acted almost like a supplementary lecturer, covering content from a different perspective which would aid in our understanding. Exam was quite fair with a good mix of questions. Overall, loved the subject.

Great subject, Yao-Ban really dives into the theory of statistical models (i.e. use of matrices). Very well structured, great lecturer, good tutorials. Exam was fair
