Reviews and tips for MAST10008

Pretty accelerated, wouldn't recommend if you are not good at math in high school. The knowledge is not simplified enough, though the notes are nice and neat. And matlab is awesome.

Really fast and challenging course, but worth it.

Interesting subject with an interesting lecturer, however the subject moves very quickly and can get quite challenging overall. However, if you stay on top of the work throughout the semester, a good score is achievable.

This subject contains parts of Linear Algebra, Calculus 2 and Real Analysis. It is very fast paced and as a first introduction to the rigorous level of university maths, can be quite difficult. The lecturer goes through many proofs during lecturers but you don't actually need to know any of them (unlike AM2). This can make the lectures seem harder than they are. If you can sift through all the proofs and get to the real content, the subject is actual fairly straightforward. Learn to love row reducing and you will enjoy this subject. Lecture slides with blank spaces are given so you need to fill them in during lectures. There is also a workbook which contains many questions (some are extension questions which wouldn't turn up in exams). There is a MATLAB component to this course which I found quite fun and easy (although a lot of people struggled). There is also a computer test for the MATLAB component but you are given a practice test which looks almost exactly the same as it. The end of semester exam isn't too hard if you study for it.

Norbury is a genius, but he works very fast. I was sitting in a group of commerce Chancellors and none of them were following what he was saying. That said, the content is fairly easy to learn if you look at it slowly and it really does change the way you view mathematics and dimensions. Do all of the weekly questions if you can; they're invaluable. Questions are fairly manageable, however.
