Reviews

I loved this subject! The content was very interesting and broad, although it would've been nice to go in depth for some of the areas. It was well structured and everything was explained very clearly by fantastic and super passionate lecturer, Josh. He made the lectures and tutes super interesting and engaging. The assignments were very straightforward and if you put in the work, they were easy enough to do well in. It was very discussion-based, which was good to get the opinions of your classmates, but I would've preferred to discuss a broader range of content in tutorials. You were set up very well for the final assignment, which is your own sociolinguistic research project, with a few lectures explaining how to structure the report, how to best conduct research, and submitting a research proposal (ungraded) for some guidance on how to best do your reseach. Overall, very enjoyable, and I would definitely recommend this as a breadth too as you don't need any prior linguistic knowledge!

This subject had very interesting and wide-ranging content, a great lecturer (Peter Hurst), and some insightful readings. The final assignment (a sociolinguistic research project) also offered a great taste of what real sociolinguistic research is like, but did require a lot of effort to succeed. The only downside were the tutes: too much time was spent listening to presentations from other class members leaving little time for questions and causing a disconnect between the tutes and the lectures.
