[2021- SUM] Meh class, really not that interesting/stimulating. Has limited applications beyond the risk aversion topic (which is more applicable if you want to go into Hons. finance). A lot of methods/spesh level calc, graphs and algebra which you could just push thru symbolab to solve. For me the math aspect wasnt the hard part of this class rather understanding the theory and knowing how to answer the questions. Exam was fine for the most part having a couple tricky questions and while having fairly tough MCQ

The subject itself isn't all that bad - a lot of maths and algebra done the same way for 12 weeks with different theory behind it. The lecturer, however, made the subject almost unbearable. As late as 12.30am the night before the morning exam we were still getting updates on how to sit the exam and we received an email during the exam with corrections/clarifications to 3 of the 6 questions. The lecturer expected it all scanned a certain way and not above a certain size for 'clarity', yet his handwritten answers and verbal explanations of the one and only sample exam we were given were the antithesis of clear. If you are required to sit this subject, perhaps try and sit it in the second semester when this lecturer is hopefully under review. Perhaps if you sit it with someone else running the show you will receive assignment marks back before the final assessment.

(summer 2021) really liked the new lecturer who is American and not Mei. personally, didn't really like it to be a maths subject than a econs subject, which the new lecturer also expressed similar views. He also used real world examples that linked the concepts throughout the weeks. Super nice and even rerecorded some lectures just cuz some minor cutoffs. but the tute stuff is still old unimelb stuff that seems like different people wrote it for every week (different terminologies and definitions for pretty important stuff which was really confusing but the lecturer made announcements to make them clear).

I hope for your sake you know your calculus and algebra. But in all seriousness if you do, a H1 is very achievable in this subject.

Dont be fooled if you concentrate it will be very simple

Definitely much better then introductory micro economics and if you can understand the maths behind the concepts should be quite easy to do well in.

[Did this in summer 2019] More mathematical than inter macro, and as a result I personally found it more interesting. Great lecturer and tutors, and although it was not easy, the exam was very doable with consistent study.

A really interesting subject and a great continuation to intro micro. Reshad was an awesome lecturer but makes tricky assignments & exam. May require a bit more effort if you have little mathematical background. But overall a very well organized and intellectually stimulating subject. Definitely recommend it as a commerce elective or breadth!

Don't be fooled, this subject is very hard for those not gifted at maths.

Why did the lecturer bother with all the theory when the exam is just maths? And not the normal maths we went through in tutorials but hard maths reminiscent of methods sac's.
