Reviews

This Communicating Science unit useful to take in your first year of uni as assignments cover basic skills needed in other science units. However, it was so incredibly boring.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2019

This unit was definitely helpful in regards to teaching you some skills you will use throughout uni e.g. Referencing, Excel etc. but honestly was pretty boring. The tutes dragg on and are pretty unnecessary and i honestly wouldn't recommend going to the lectures- listen to them online so you can speed them up because their a pretty big waste of time. Make sure you chose a good theme at the start because it will be used for all assessments.

Appreciated the lack of an exam. Assignments were relatively easy, but having to choose a theme for the presentation based on a majority vote was restricting. Tutorial content was often dull, and the tutor and people were the only reason I kept going back,

Marking for assignments was quite harsh. They made each tutorial group choose a theme (based on majority vote so unfair to those who didn't want the chosen theme) that carried through every assignment for the whole unit. The lectures dragged on a bit and some had no relevance to the unit at all (too many lectures for the amount of content covered). Some good information on how to write a scientific report and use endnote for bibliographies.

I did learn a bit about the use of endnote and had a fairly brief intro to essay writing but that was it. Tutorials were boring, and the last group assignment was based on your whole class so if you were stuck in a class with people who didn't know what they were doing, that would drag down your mark too.

Do this unit in first year! I did this in second year and was the worst unit i have had so far. Didn't learn anything apart from a few tricks on word and excel. The tutorials were far too long and blabbered on about common knowledge to most who attended. It was assessed with weirdly weighted assignments including a 4 minute presentation worth not even 4%? It was more work than i thought it would be (especially the weekly activities). Just an utter drag but i suppose it would be fun for students just freshly arriving at university.

So easy, almost no effort required for an HD

I hated this unit so much. It DID help me a lot with writing reports and presentations but overall it was a bit pointless and boring and it was dragged so much. The group assignment was very important so if you don't end up with responsible people your gpa is going down in hell. Also, you gotta be lucky and get a good tutor to get good marks. My tutor was awesome she helped me out with everything and was willing to explain it all and spend her personal time helping us. if you end up with the old guy you're dead. i regret taking this unit so much.

Good unit to upskill yourself with the technology required to get through uni - not the best unit but an easy HD :) the lecturers are also really boring

This unit was overall okay. A small bit of it was actually helpful, but the majority was mind numbing. The easy marks were nice, and my tutorial was really relaxed and great to make some new friends, but one of the lecturers was incredibly boring (despite being in the Sience Communication area?) and most of the lectures were pointless.
