Reviews

The unit was very easy, but your grades depend a lot on which tutor you get. The content is super dry and boring but pretty elementary level so it’s not bad. Easy peasy unit but my tutor was dreadful and made it seem way deeper than it really was, had no real evidence for the way she marked either when asked for more feedback. It’s nothing personal, she just wasn’t the best. Just to put things into perspective, she didn’t even understand what a percentage was... Steer clear of a young to middle aged woman, red glasses, pixie cut and animal tattoos if you’re gonna do this unit around the time this review was posted. Students in other classes seemed to thrive though.

Unit was a breeze. Lectures aren't examinable (no exam) and assignments seemingly had little relation to the lectures; lectures discussing the assignments are necessary for obvious reasons. First assessment was an individual oral presentation and was honestly really easy as long as you grab some feedback on your presentation during labs (this is your best shot because the tutors are marking, so follow their standards and not your own). Second assignment was a lab report and I would say is reasonably difficult for a 1st year unit. Please do compare your report with other published literature as its an easy way to grasp the format and content sought for. There are plenty of walkthroughs given for the data analysis part and I would say are not difficult (contrary to previous reviews) since most of it is using excel and is automatic. You'll only need to know how to use the statistical tests that they teach you and a bit of logic to understand how to analyse the data. Last assignment was groupwork whereby you guys would have to design an initiative based to combat a global problem (problem is predetermined). Instructions are vague, however it gives plenty of room for creativity; this is what tutors are looking for and I would say is not a barrier to getting a good score in this section. Although, this section weighs a hefty 30% and is honestly unfair if you get useless teammates. Rubrics for all the assessments are vague, which is why you need to ask questions. Aiming for a D is easily achievable, however a HD would be mostly luck given the group project.

This was a pretty easy unit because there's no real content - Id say you could skip most of the lectures besides some weeks for the data analysis stuff - they're essential. Be warned lots of oral presenting though! Marking keys are all vague so be careful ask questions. First assignment is fairly easy but hard to get an HD in. Second assignment was crazy difficult please leave lots of time for this assignment as the data analysis is very hard if you've never had any experience with this before! Attend the help session and ask lots of questions!! Finally the group project was very vague. Its hard if your group members are crappy but that's all luck and there is a peer review! Overall an okay unit.

Don't recommend this either lol.

Joke of a unit honestly, do not recommend

It was an okay subject but the marking was really harsh for the lab report. The lectures were only seven to twenty minutes long with a max of five lectures a week so you could finish a weeks worth in a day. While the lectures were interesting and fun to watch the group project was not well structured and it was hard to understand what was required of us. This unit has important skills for the future regardless of what major but would not recommend as a GPA booster since it's hard to get a HD.

I swear this was such a boring unit, the 2-hour labs left me feeling and looking DEAD. Overall, this unit teaches you skills that would be useful in other science units, but I wouldn't recommend taking this unit unless you have to as it's quite difficult to get an HD in this unit.

The lecturer was amazing and this unit is one of the science units that require minimal effort to pass with flying colours/excellent grades. It was such an easy unit that you should take it if you are in need of a GPA boost!

This unit is super helpful for teaching you how to reference. It also has no exam which is a nice bonus. As of 2018, the unit comprises of three main assignments: 3 min speech, 1500 word essay, and main group project which is where the whole tut is one large group and you have to plan an event. You also have to do other smaller tasks online, which come with tutorials which are easy to do. The 2-hour labs definitely felt draining and were useless towards the end. The 1500 word report was also a little bit frustrating because the instructions the lecturer would give and the tut would give were conflicting.

Great unit. Patrick is a fantastic lecturer. The report writing, presentation skills and computer application skills you learn are so useful for all science units you do, I feel as though the skills from this unit have significantly benefited my other units, I highly recommend this unit even if it's not a complimentary unit of your major. A distinction is easy to achieve if you do all the tiny online assessment tasks as they all add up, but I will say a HD is almost impossible.
