Reviews

Learnt essentially nothing from this unit. Quantitative analysis was only very briefly and quickly touched on in unit content. First year introductory stat units are infinity more useful. The then 'learnt' quantitative analysis was then applied to a very messy group assignment, that was plagued with constant changes and errors in the data, which also lacked guidance. The lecturer would frequently skim over important topics and formulas, usually under the pretext that we know the information from previous finance units. There was also a noticeable lack of examples using formulas learnt. This often lead to numerous times I had to teach my self the content just working through the weekly tutorial questions. I found FINA2205 to feel more like a tedious and painful FINA1221 then a useful quantitative analysis unit. Overall I would not recommend this unit if you want to further your quantitative analysis skills.

Like the other good comment here, I do not even expect I would get HD but finally I did in this unit. This unit really improves my data analyzing skills in excel, and taught some useful staff in quantitative finance. However, this unit seems to spend lots of time reveiwing previous statistic knowledge, which is a downside though.

Such a good unit for math-inclined finance students, but even still the math isn't harder than STAT1520. Yihui is such a lovely unit coordinator and I had her as my tutor. 10% of the grade was for participation, and if you answer 4 questions over the semester, that's your whole 10% right there. She also gives a mid-sem worth 10% which she provides good practice for. 30% of your grade is the assignment, which you'll be fine as long as you have a good group. My group was horrendous so that sucked a lot but was out of my control. The final semester exam was a bit tough, but nothing that she didn't give us good practice on. Honestly this has been one of the most valuable finance units I've done and I feel like the other reviews are now outdated. I would recommend to anyone with basic stats knowledge. I did this a full 2 years after my STAT1520 and was fine, finished on 82% pre-exam. There is no textbook and the weekly exercises are enough, plus she provides short and long answers as well so as long as youre motivated, you have everything you need.

It is a tedious unit and I didn't particularly find much value in the unit.

Informative unit however it seems very theoretical and focuses a lot on derivations which we are not accessed on. Could be more effective if the unit presented more application questions.
