Trash automated course (unlike pre2020). Everything is computerized and we don't even do proper math questions. We use the awful Maple calculator (that the vast majority of math1a students will never use in any other course at UNSW besides math1b). Forcing us to use maple is unnecessary and probably only force us to use it because UNSW signed a multibillion dollar indefinite contract with Maplesoft. There is zero incentive to properly engage with the material as the course heavily supports rote learning (final exam is 80% question bank, 20% unseen 'novel' problems). Vast majority who score D or HD definitely got there by memorising hundreds of questions. It's literally just a test of memorisation. So embarrasing for a university that prides itself on 'best university in Australia' marketing gimick. UNSW should just go back to the basics and stop treating university as an pedagogical experiment. Math is the way math is at USYD, MIT, Cambridge, Oxford, UniMelb and any other leading institution because...that's what math actually is. If UNSW is so desperate, they should have a seperate maple assignment OR exam worth less than 20% of the course grade, and then keep the 80% traditional final exam and mid term if there is one. Or better yet... just leave Maple tool to a specialized computational math course

MATH1131 is a foundational course that requires a strong grasp of both calculus and linear algebra. Having served as a Mathematics Teaching Assistant for this course , I found that students often struggle with the transition to university-level rigor in proofs and abstract concepts. Focus heavily on the weekly maple labs and online quizzes, as they are essential for securing an HD.

Not very tough, keep up to dates on lectures, do tutorials and practice past papers, you will get high marks.

Assessment is non standard, questions are not straight forward, relies heavily on students understanding how to use Maple and spending weeks practicing and discussing the practice exams. Other institutions assess material in other ways.

Go to the lectures, do the tutorial questions and past papers - you'll have no problems getting a high grade.

Easy if you keep up to date

Very good course with wonderful and responsible lectures. The content will be easier for those did well in highschool maths and getting an HD is not difficult. Can be challenging for students without a HSC Mathematics background but the lectures and tutors are helpful, so it is recommended students ask for guidance. The tutorial problems are useful for this course.

Generally good lecturers for the subject. Some of calculus seems a little dry with its introduction to analysis (to be fair - all of the things like IVT, Max-Min theorem get more interesting in higher dimensions). The Algebra component is extremely useful.

Lecturers are brilliant, but if you didn't do a high level of maths in high school get ready for a steep learning curve! The course moves fast, so make sure to stay on top of revision and pay attention in tutorials.
