I did this subject in person with the tutor James. I found it an amazing experience overall and I wish that in could continue with level 2 (I have no lvl1 breadth left). James is a fantastic tutor. He is very kind and approachable with any questions that you have. You also find that by the end of the semester that you have learnt a significant amount of German. If you are interested in German culture and want to learn how to have a basic conversation then this subject is perfect for you. Everyone thought I was crazy taking a language alongside a full load 3rd year biomedicine but German 1 is in my top 3 subjects of my whole degree. It is definitely worth doing and you meet great people in the small classes. The fortnightly tests are not something to be scared of as they are quite easy if you have listened and asked questions in class. They also help significantly to prepare for the exam as I found that I remembered the language better after frequent tests. I highly recommend doing the grammar practice questions in the textbook and writing practice emails during swotvac for the exam :)

A great introduction the German language, helped by an amazing tutor (Daniela). The unit is extremely grammar heavy and there is a lot of vocab covered too, but if you put a little bit of work in to revise and keep track of the content you've covered, you get a lot out of it.

Really enjoyed this class, but don't take it if you aren't willing to put in a bit of extra work with memorisation etc. It is very fast paced but achievable and Daniela is a really excellent tutor! If there was one thing I didn't enjoy, it would be the amount of time wasted in class from people asking questions that the tutor had just gone over.

Did this subject in winter term. It was very intensive, lots to learn in a short time frame, but the tutor was had a great personality, very considerate and was great at teaching the content. Despite amount of content, the tutor made it relatively clear what will be tested on, the tests were useful as a guide. Really enjoyed the subject and a very achievable H1 if you put in the effort.

Taught at a fast rate, but a great language to pick. Es ist sehr gut.

Tutor I had was very fun. Lots of vocab to learn but as long as you put in the work at home you will do fine. Pace picks up towards the end, I found the regular tests very useful for keeping my learning up to date. Must be interested in learning German language and about Germany!

Overly fast paced and you don't learn a lot of basic vocabulary/grammar

Very well taught subject, although there was a lot of vocab that needed to be learned at home; we could have done with more vocab in class. Quizlet is extremely useful but it lacks context for the words you're trying to learn.

I love the culture aspect of the course, and the classes are fast-paced enough to stay interesting through all the grammar. I love this class!
