This unit was alright. It is split into three sections of content - some history and modern outline of the French language, then French journalism/media and finally a brief section on french lit and the passé simple. I felt like the final section was the least engaging, it felt rushed and many French electives engage with similar content. Conversely, I feel like we could have spent a whole semester just on the first topic, which focused on different aspects like verlan and the roots of french. The quizzes were pretty useless but didn't take up too much time. Overall, it's not bad for a compulsory unit.

A pretty good French subject, I think it was really good for oral and listening practice. We did do some grammar in class (like the passé simple which you needed for the last assessment) but I think the grammar was a bit rushed and I felt I didn't learn it very well, you'd probably want to revise that a lot outside of class to really understand and remember it. Sandrine was a really good tutor too, and overall it was pretty enjoyable, and I met a lot of nice people!

While I enjoyed most of the content in this class, I feel like there was such a varied level of french knowledge in the class that I made little improvement over the sem. Also a lot of studying for a bunch of quizzes that could be completed in 5 mins! I kinda liked the last assignment and once you've got a grasp on passé simple its not too bad, but overall the assignments were quite harshly marked (although maybe that's just my experience).

I enjoyed this subject more than French 5 and 6, even though the content became quite politics-heavy towards the middle of the semester. Apart from that, it was really nice to learn about short stories and the passé simple, but we were kind of thrown in the deep end with the final assignment being a 1700 short story using the passé simple, a tense we had only just learnt a few weeks prior. Also, we had to read Salut et Liberté which was short but super boring and it was only worth reading for one quiz that was worth 2.5% of our final grade.

If you just like being surrounded by the French language in the tutorials and you don't mind writing a lot in French then this is great. The content it a bit repetitive from French 5 & 6 and some of the assessments require way more work than they're worth and it does kind of feel like they've run out of things to teach, but overall it's a pretty good subject. Charlotte is the best tutor so if you get her then you're so lucky!!

French 7, pretty repetitive, work on your oral and try to broaden your vocab as much as you can.

Incredibly dull, pretty much useless, and my tutor was ignorant and unprofessional. That's what you get from compulsory subjects.
