Reviews

This subject offers an engaging exploration of popular culture, focusing on its role in shaping societal and cultural norms. It covers a wide range of topics, from K-pop and blockbuster films to viral videos, memes, and selfies, providing a comprehensive view of mass-mediated culture in the modern era. The course uses a "circuit of culture" model, allowing students to analyze the production, regulation, and consumption of cultural phenomena. Key themes include the politics of popular culture and its ability to reinforce or challenge societal structures. Assessments are well-structured to encourage critical thinking and research skills. These include a critical reading, a mid-semester essay, and a final research essay, all of which provide opportunities to dive deeply into specific case studies. Students have found the subject fun and highly relevant, especially for those interested in media and cultural studies. The content is relatable and allows for engaging discussions about contemporary cultural phenomena. Overall, this subject is a fantastic choice for anyone keen to critically analyze the interplay between media, society, and popular culture.

I took this subject because the name is quite interesting. However, do not expect you gonna study about Kpop the whole semester, I did then I ended up a bit disappointed lol. It will only be teach in week 11 or 12 if I remember it correctly. Each week is a different topic related to culture, trendy stuff, etc. End of each module you will have to write a 300 words blog which they were pretty chill for me to do as well. No exams, just blogs + essays + participation so definitely worth taking as a breadth to boost your wam.
