Reviews

Good assessments, no exam. Got a D But oh god I HATE THE STUPID REVERSE CLASSROOM MODEL. It's like teaching yourself everything but worse since they scatter the information everywhere and it's a hunt to fill in those study notes. JUST DO A LECTURE AND TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2023

I think I got a D or HD without even seeing the material or making notes. I would just guess on the learning curve questions, and somehow did the exam. I didn't do biology in VCE btw or have a background in it.

I completed this unit way back in S1 2013 but I taught the unit as a PASS leader for 5 years. Very few changes were made to the unit and for good reason. Across the board it is a well-put together, informative, and useful unit that gives you a base to continute study in the biological or health sciences. As others have pointed out, if you have done 3/4 VCE bio you'll absolute steam through this unit like I did, and it is very content-heavy. A couple of areas always give students difficulty, myself included when I first took it, so I believe it is less of an issue of poor teaching and more that there are truly just some tricky concepts.

This unit was way too content heavy. Did not bother to do any of the readings. However, it's easy to pass if you just do the bare minimum.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2020

From my experience tutoring this course, content is a general introduction to biology and presents major themes such as genetics, cellular respiration, photosynthesis and lab techniques. However, if students do not have a firm background in high school biology/chemistry, this may be slightly challenging.

It has interesting content, and following VCE biology it was not challenging. The workshops relied to heavily on the activities, which I did not find assisted my learning, while most of the learning was done alone in the pre-workshop work. The labs were great though, they really gave a better understanding of the conent.

Anonymous, Semester 2, 2019

Half the content (gen, inheritance, microbio) was really interesting but the diversity info is really content heavy. Could use a tute but don't see that happening any time soon.

Textbook is essential for a the weekly quizzes, especially if you haven't done VCE biology some lecturers are very good and engaging while others are very boring (recommend just skipping these lectures and reading the book). Lab experience is totally dependant on who you get as a TA, also a very boring group assignment if you don't get a good topic. multiple choice exam makes this unit alot easier though

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2018

The unit is great if you did 3&4 VCE Biology as most of the topics were covered again.

Anonymous, Semester 1, 2018

Very content heavy and the readings are quite arduous. Definitely was my least favourite subject of the semester. Definitely would have been much harder if I didn't have a biology background already and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't unless they are prepared to work super hard
