Really interesting unit if you have already some interest in history (I'm usually an ancient history student but loved this anyway). Assignments were a bit tedious, but challenging. Tutorials could be quite interesting as well, the readings were usually not that boring. The quizzes were pretty easy to get full marks for as long as you paid some attention to the lectures & readings.

Agree with the below 2-star review. The content of the unit was not that engaging unless you are specifically enthralled with this period, and the assessments were also repetitive and the instructions confusing - particularly from the lecturer/convenor who seemed rude at times. Did this unit to fill up my 100 levels that I needed for Modern History as a second major - so I had completed 2 and 300 level units and found this one was marked harder and marking seemed off par with every other MHIS subject taken beforehand. Would not recommend to be honest and would have dropped if didn't need the 100 done that semester.

The lecturer was so knowledgeable and engaging, definitely the highlight of the unit, even though there weren't any lecture slides just listening to the content really helped you. The weekly 'in-class' tests weren't helpful to your understanding of the unit and weren't marked very well either, they would be more beneficial if they were online. Unless you are VERY interested in this period, have previous knowledge, and know that you will contribute a SIGNIFICANT amount of time to the extensive readings you are expected to do each week, I would stay away from the unit.

As another review has mentioned, I am a history major and this has been my favourite subject by far so far! The lecturer is brilliant, his content is engaging and his lectures are styled like an argument so are easier to follow and the content sticks in your head. I always look forward to lectures. I hope to become a uni lecturer one day and would like to mimic my style upon his. This subject is not only fascinating but brilliant in teaching you how to be an historian and how to work with sources. The content is arranged thematically not chronologically which is so much better in my opinion. Even though I study Ancient History I hope to take on all of the lecturer's other subjects as I am really learning and improving with this one!

I did MHIS 121 but under the name, After the Black Death: Europe 1348-1789. Best history unit I've ever taken (and I'm a history major). The lecturer was absolutely amazing, engaging and and expert on the period. Also had a great tutor, would recommend 100%.
