Reviews

The unit was not too difficult in workload. Lectures were short and the course in general was quite practical-based. At times the unit could be unclear with assessment requirements and instructions. The quality of students was poor. Many students failed to complete the required reading or tasks in preparation for seminars. I found the tutor, Willa's response to this unacceptable. She would often allow large portions of class time to be wasted to allow those students to read or complete what was originally meant to be homework. I think a more stricter approach should have been taken because it was unfair to those students in the class who had taken the time to prepare for class. As a result, less was achieved in the seminar then necessary. I didn't find group feedback overly useful. One girl was extremely rude and did not even provide any feedback for my article despite detailed feedback I had given for her article during group work in class. I think discipline is an issue overall in this course. Students think it is okay to be slack about doing work, being late or talking loudly about personal issues during class and the tutors accept it. Another issue which I think is especially important was the feedback you get from the tutor. Willa was my tutor, yet didn't provide constructive feedback or was not specific in her critique of work. As a result, despite doing well throughout the semester for assessments leading up to the final assignment, my final piece was marked poorly (by another tutor). I was shocked at this because I had asked Willa for specific feedback and she had responded positively that my piece was coming along well. I would recommend for those students taking the unit to get Gabiann McCabe as your tutor. She is really specific with her feedback, can read your work at a glance and already point to where you can improve and leads a more productive tutorial than Willa. We had her for one seminar, and we got through so much more and learnt heaps more than with Willa. Also, Gabiann actually answers her emails!! Many students attempted to email Willa with questions or queries about their work and got no response. Finally and in my opinion, I am concerned about the quality of student candidature for these media courses. It seems to be comprised of mediocre students and I think this brings down the quality of the course. This course gets three stars because despite all of these issues, i didn't put in as much effort as my other units and managed to do well.
