Reviews

The course content is dry, but necessary for understanding future media courses with similar concepts. What made the course was enjoyable was Rachael Gunn as both a convener and tutor - she's super enthusiastic and helps you understand the course material. If you do the course, you might want to make sure you end up with her as your tutor.

It's your standard general media unit. An essay at the end, no exam, regular weekly content. Do the readings, keep up with lectures and prepare a couple of points or questions to raise in class for participation and you'll be fine. Not a very interesting unit, and not recommended for non-media students.

It was a good unit because of the lecturer. Otherwise, it wasn't very interesting content and tutors lacked confidence. I felt that it was ok in term organisation, and they should have taken more time to teach concepts. To do well, revise over concepts and revise over the readings for the tests as the questions are very specific to readings. But overall, not a bad unit.

I did not enjoy this subject at all and will not recommend it to anyone. Some of the lecturers were reading their own journal articles instead of giving a proper lecture to the students. Some lecturers were engaging and fun. Tutorials were not very engaging, mainly discussed peoples views. If you are a foreigner you will suffer in this subject as often you are asked to know several Australian TV shows, movies and be up to date with current news (and know about the Australian state of events for the last 10 years.) The tutor I received was very laid back, and not very helpful. The surprise quiz is not very fair either, you have to memorise things in great detail (and it is expected that you do the readings for the whole semester! before the quiz). The participation section in this subject is very overweighted, if you do not try to engage in this subject, you will loose marks. In addition, the essay plan isn't easy to score in (worth 20%). If you're looking for an easy subject, this is not it!

Conflicted on this subject. The lecturer was mostly great - most engaging I've had, but I think she may have left now. The content was ok but the marking on the essay was very tough and as such I didn't go as well as hoped/expected. There are 'surprise' quizzes which are overweighted and a bit unnecessary in my opinion. Struggled with the tutor as well, he seemed to just want to create unnecessary arguments in class and wasn't very helpful when it came to direction for the assignments. If you get a better one though, you should do fine. Still managed a credit despite the above.
