Didn't really enjoy this unit. Some of the lectures were quite interesting but no point in watching them because most of the assessments didn't require lecture content. Assessments were very unorganised and weren't explained well. No final exam which was good.

Really didn't like this subject. I guess some of the lectures were somewhat interesting... there was just no need to watch most of them because there were not many assessments that required knowledge of the content. One of the assignments in particular seemed quite pointless: we had to "reconstruct" an Aboriginal language based on 6 other Aboriginal languages, and we were given little guidance for it. It was just not a unit that will have any use in my life :'D but I can see how some others who are interested in linguistics research could find this subject interesting.

This unit was really fun. It's a great introduction to linguistics and gives you a view of the breadth of linguistics. Lectures - I found all of the lectures really interesting. Some were more engaging than others, however, I think this is just down to the lecturer's personal style - Because of COVID, most of the lectures were last year's, however, Nick did a really good job of trying to ensure we understood the content. One of the lectures was two lectures cut in a certain way to join them together, which when listening was very confusing. Nick then actually created an additional lecture (on accident) which re-explained this lecture, in a clearer way. Tutorials -The tutorials were kind of boring. Because of COVID, the course was mainly online, and I gave up going to tutorials because they became a waste of time as the tutor was not very helpful with anything. Assessments - The assessments at first seemed quite hard, however, once you looked at the content that related to them, they were very straightforward - All of the staff which do this unit are really helpful in answering any questions about assessments, which was really beneficial when we were online - There is an essay instead of a final exam, which is awesome because the essay topics are provided basically at the beginning of the semester, so you could start researching them straightaway Overall, really enjoyed this unit. Each year is slightly different, as they adapt the content on student feedback, but I loved the variety of topics discussed.

Really fun and easy subject. Tutorials were kind of boring but the lectures were great with a broad range of topics in linguistics and language covered in them. Marking is not too bad and the lecturers and tutors are all pretty fun. Sick Nick is my fave though <333333

Fun, easy, engaging

This unit was quite easy, although the content was quite dry and boring. Personally I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. There were lots of homework tasks to do and some were rather complex. It was generously marked though, so was quite easy to achieve a HD.

This unit was quite easy! You get to learn a lot of different aspects about linguistics. The marking is not too harsh and there is no final exam!
