Reviews

As the previous reviewers said DON'T DO THIS UNIT IF YOU DONT NEED TO! I did this as an elective and I got to say it is one of the worse subjects I've done. You would think that this unit is about child play, but it's all around reading and they mark the assignments very harshly. They can give you more than 30 pages of reading for 1 week and there's obviously other subjects people are in too! Don't think this unit is easy because "there's no final exam" IT ISN'T. There is a book you got to get which is about $70. Waste of time and waste of money.

Hated this subject. The content was really interesting but the tutorials were a dull waste of time. We were made to spend most of the class writing sentences and then reading them out loud to the class. Assignments were marked harshly and the online quizzes were tricky.

This subject was awful. Some interesting information regarding play in early childhood education but the information becomes quite repetitive - it feels as though they had three points they had to hit and just dragged those simple points out for a semester, which sucked. The WORST PART of this subject was the marking of assignments. For a 100(0) level subject, the marking is SO HARSH. I failed my first essay (which was my first ever university essay - but the next essay I did one week later got a credit so I was pretty pissed off) and got NO FEEDBACK on how to improve my writing; they basically say "you suck, figure it out". Yeshe is a horrible communicator and comes off as condescending and rude when you attempt to ask a question, which makes it difficult to fully engage yourself as you can quickly feel left behind. So, as others have said, if it isn't required DO NOT PICK THIS UNIT!!

WARNING: DO NOT DO THIS SUBJECT IF IT IS NOT REQUIRED FOR YOUR COURSE! This had nothing to do with my course yet I chose it believing it would be an opportunity to do a more "relaxing" subject (or that is what I thought) or to try something new. This was the most stressful subject I have ever done! Firstly, the tutorials felt unorganized (my initial tutorial class got canceled). Semester 2 had to watch pre-recorded lectures from the previous semester, which personally isn't helpful for me. 90% of the information is common sense (honestly gave me a high school P.E. theory kind of vibe) All they mostly stressed on was the required readings. The only thing I really learned was how to cramp 9 70+ page readings into one essay, even if they don't fit in your argument. It's absolutely annoying that the only way we can prove we have done the readings is by mentioning content from every single one in the module, which is so hard to keep on track!. The information in the assignments is worded terribly and the convenor Yeshe was giving important information last minute. Not to mention they are the harshest markers. The fact that if you forget one required reading in your assignment means you've failed the assignment is ridiculous. On a good note, the two tutors I had were very sweet and they did a good job trying to make the tutorials engaging. I just submitted my final assessment and I am so glad I don't have to do this subject (or anything in the ECH units) ever again! This subject had a lot of potential to make the content interesting, it was unfortunately about the readings and less about engaging in the learning of child play.

Ridiculous unit full of repetitive common sense, that strangely has unnecessarily difficult assignments to make it seem like it's actually useful. One week, we had about 70 pages of compulsory reading. Most units you don't need to do the readings, but for this unit you need to know them well because all of your assignments are majorly based on them. Ridiculous expectations to know everything when the reading requirements are huge. The convenor Yeshe doesn't listen to students and stubbornly defends his unit instead of empathising with students about ANYTHING. He might seem nice in person, but don't let it fool you, he has a whole other childish side on the general discussion forum. He posts wrong information, and when he's called out he either uses some excuse about how you should get your information from more than one place and not just where he told you to look, or he secretly deletes the old information and pretends it never happened. Feedback usually criticises you for your choice of words, more than your actual content. The markers are told to mark harshly for some reason. Yeshe knows his unit only gets mostly passes, so he puts the range up for public visibility to make it sound like most people are doing well, when they aren't. He should put up the average if he wants to play that game. Unit hasn't changed for years despite negative feedback. Don't do this horrible unit if it isn't compulsory for you.

I share the same experience to the others, so I agree this unit is HORRIBLE, possibly the worst unit I've ever done. One thing that needs to be highlighted further is the lack of respect the tutors and convenor give students. Especially in tutorials, I and many others feel treated as if we was a children. This unit also does not appreciate different opinions or perspectives. For example, if you're asked for your opinion, and you do not summarise what they have just taught, you are made to feel ashamed for even presenting the idea.

share the same sentiments as other reviews. Required readings are usually an entire chapter of the textbook. If you didn't read it, you'll be lost in the tutorials and the assignments. The convenor, Yeshe, was very unwelcoming and pretentious and came across as so in the online discussion boards, too. As long as you don't have him as a tutor, you'll be fine. Mine was very sweet and encouraging and engaged the class in meaningful discussions to share our understandings and views of the lessons. Although there aren't any exams, the assignments and weekly quizzes in the latter part of the session makes up for it. And the presentation slides are not posted on ilearn so you'd have to sit through echo to read through the slides. Wouldn't recommend taking this unit if you have a choice not to, or in your first year. One of my classmates mentioned that this unit was by far, the most difficult unit he had taken in his three years at uni.

Awful unit, the reading that you're expected to do is ridiculous and usually just covers the same ideas conveyed in different ways. If you don't do the readings, expect to be berated in tutorials like a child. The convener, Yeshe, is pretentious, rude and condescending and will mark harshly with little feedback as to why he chose to do so. Assessments aren't exactly related to you showing you understand the content, you will get pass marks if you do so, if you want a D or HD you will have to tediously cross-reference authors with the same ideas. There is more of an emphasis on tediously tracking down these ideas by different authors, across weeks of readings and hundreds of pages, than there is in you showing that you understand the content. It's honestly one of the worst first year units you can take, don't be fooled by the seemingly easy topic. To give you an idea of how ridiculous the readings are, some weekly readings for this unit had MORE pages assigned than my readings for my Psych major and neuroscience elective (both units which are more content heavy, for good reasons, than this garbage unit) put together.

I did this unit as my first year unit, and this was one hell of a ride. There are a lot of readings to do which are compulsory, as they go through the readings thoroughly during tutes. This isn't a unit where you can relax because it's not easy. Most of the content was common sense but some of the content was interesting. I thoroughly did not enjoy this unit.

Absolutely worst unit ever. Do NOT do this unit if you are looking for easy credit points. Tutorials are so packed, childish and unenjoyable. Wayyyyy too much heavy reading for a first year unit and you are expected to read so much before each tutorial. No exams but the assignments are heavy and quizzes are hard and specific. 0/10 recommend.
