The usefulness of the field work component of a social work course depends largely on finding a host agency that provides learning opportunities for a student. The quality of placement experience varies as do university arrangements with govt and ngo agencies. Exploring alternative models of linking theory to practice in a work setting may increase the standard of field work learning. Evidence is needed to demonstrate field work standards are maintained.
