As an Associate Lecturer for this course in 2011 and 2012, I can say that it lays the foundation for the remainder of equilibrium economics (i.e. neoclassical economics). I believe it is a necessary skill, so even if you don't score well, it will help you understand the mathematics of the rest of the courses you will take.
