Very easy HD. This unit is very easy for a second year unit, especially considering that it acts as an introduction to molecular biology for some reason. This unit does not belong under the pathology major, nor have PATH in it's name, since it has almost no focus on pathology whatsoever, and is probably only relevant to genetic pathology. Unit has 24 lectures. Unit is not particularly content heavy, some lectures being noticeably easier than others though. Amber is a great lecturer, although sometimes rambles. There's quite a bit of content overlap with the prerequisite units, particularly in the test 1 content. You can do fine in this unit either with SCIE1106 or with IMED1002, neither will really give you an advantage (I did all three) although IMED1002 may give a slightly higher advantage since it covers content similar to the final 2 inheritance lectures in this unit. IMED1002 went in more detail on things which are later repeated and expanded upon in the first few lectures, but on the other hand SCIE1106 covered recombinant DNA technologies a little which IMED1002 didn't mention at all. The workshop is very enjoyable, and although it would help, having a good group is not required since the questions are mostly easy. Although, to some extent Amber tries to compensate for the workshop questions being easy by marking them harshly, looking for specific and accurate answers, so take care to that. Second in-semester test is harder than the first, but not considerably. Written SDL based on the workshops is marked somewhat strictly, but a high mark is still achievable. Exam is very easy, both MCQ and SAQ components, assessing the content mostly superficially. IMED1004 has 2 lectures which are essentially the same as Cell Cycle Control I & II, with multiple lecture slides being the exact same, but that's the only similarity between these two units. Prerequisite units already prepare you sufficiently well for this unit. No clue whatsoever what the 1 star review is going on about, exam was not difficult, even in comparison to the in-semester tests. One of the 3 star reviews makes a good point that unfortunately the workshops aren't actually executed anymore, and we just use data from previous year groups.

This unit is a good introduction to molecular medicine and cellular biology, building on what is taught in SCIE1106. I must admit Amber is not a very good lecturer, she tends to ramble and doesn’t present the content concisely. As a unit coordinator she took over a month to respond to an email regarding my assignment grade (which was leaving my unit grade in the balance) which was highly stressful. The tests were relatively simple but 20 minutes long and scheduled on Friday evenings in person. Online quizzes would have been much easier. The tutorials were pretty fun. Each group was assigned an exon of the LDLR gene and each week a new diagnostic test would be introduced and you would need to clinically analyze and interpret the real results of that test on your exon. It was a great way to apply our learning. The exam was quite difficult and the content was also quite hard to understand at times because lecturers were not very clear. Overall an okay unit.

amber and liz are some of the most competent and supportive unit coordinators you could ever come across! they ran the unit very smoothly given the covid circumstances this semester. the unit is very straight forward, there were a few questions in assessments that i did think were unfair due to their specificity, but overall very enjoyable and could not recommend more:) the lab write up is easy marks to achieve, as is the SDL and flow cytometry worksheets. exam was straightforward

I was skeptical of this unit considering the last reviews, but now that there is a new unit coordinator, this unit has improved greatly. The lecture content is interesting and 80% of the time it relates to at least 2 or 3 other lectures. The labs were interesting but somewhat annoying as there is only 1 time slot (Wednesday, 9am, QEII). The 2 tests were very reasonable in terms of difficulty but I felt set very low standards compared to the exam. The exam (50%) was challenging if you hadn’t revised the content at least twice. I’d recommend trying to optimise you’re test scores (2 x 10%) and lab write up (10%) as the remaining lab work (20%) was dependent on you’re group that you work with for 5 sessions. Overall an interesting unit, easy to get a credit and HD is possible if you put in a few hours of work a week. TL;DR - doable, try get a good pre exam average, easily credit/distinction

did anyone find the exam super hard compared to the content? V HARD UNIT

This unit had the potential to be great. Unfortunately we didnt get to even turn on a diagnostic machine which was a let down. Was quite challenging at times for a second year unit but it would be an easy unit to pass and do well in the scheme of things i think. Double check your assignment mine had incorrect feedback i had to make several appeals to recieve honest marks. I followed there advice and was marked down a little in the end of it. They didnt really prepare us for it. The 5 weeks the report was about was group work and it was strange and gave a false sense of what research is like in my opinion. If you liked Scie1106 or genetics this is a pretty good unit for you. Overall i liked the unit but i wouldnt do it again nor have chose it unless i had to. Goodluck
